Capital Project Engineer III/IV

Salary: $83,000 - $108,000 (salary will be commensurate with experience)

Role Summary

Civil Engineer III: Assignments require independent evaluation, selection, and application of standard civil engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria in order to make adaptations and modifications to existing plans or specifications. Performance at this level requires a professional civil engineer, competent in conventional aspects of civil and traffic engineering. May coordinate the work of engineers, draftspersons, technicians, and others who assist in specific assignments.

Civil Engineer IV: The knowledge and expertise required for this level of work results from progressive experience. Assignments require the application of intensive and diversified knowledge of civil engineering principles and practices. Makes decisions independently on engineering problems and methods, and represents the City in public meetings and conferences to resolve important questions and to plan and coordinate work. Requires the use of advanced techniques and the modification and extension of theories, precepts, and practices of sciences and disciplines. Coordinates the work of consultants, contractors and staff assigned to the project.

(Depending on experience and qualifications, candidates may be considered at the Civil Engineer III or Civil Engineer IV level).

Training and Experience (position requirements at entry)

Civil Engineer III/IV:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited four-year college or university


Civil Engineer III:

  • A minimum of five years of full-time civil engineering experience, if a Professional Licensed Engineer (PE) in the State of Michigan
  • A minimum of eight years of full-time civil engineering experience, if has passed the Fundamental-in-Engineering (FE) exam


Civil Engineer IV:

  • Professional Engineering License in the State of Michigan or the ability to obtain one in less than six months from the date of hire.
  • Minimum of eight years of progressive civil engineering and engineering practice.

  • Valid Driver's License


Civil Engineer III:

  • Fundamental-in-Engineering (FE), or Professional Engineering License (PE)


Civil Engineer IV:

  • Professional Engineering License (PE)
