Kind of Work Under the direction of the Chief Building Official, performs responsible administrative and technical work in directing all activities related to the enforcement of building codes. Work includes directing, managing, supervising, and coordinating the activities and operations of the Building Inspections staff including supervisory personnel. Work also includes advanced technical and skilled work in the inspection of residential, commercial, and industrial buildings and structures during various stages of construction, alteration, renovation and/or repair. Performs technical reviews of building and building system plans, specifications and construction documents for compliance with applicable Building Codes and Ordinances; and related work as required.
Minimum Qualifications (Promotional) - Permanent status in an inspectional job classification at pay grade 72 or higher and eight (8) years of experience performing building, mechanical, or electrical inspection work.
- Active International Code Council (ICC) certification as a Residential Building Inspector and Commercial Building Inspector.
- A valid driver's license.
(Original Entrance)1. Eight (8) years* of full-time experience doing technical building inspectional work one year of which must have been in a lead or supervisory capacity.

*NOTE: A Bachelor's Degree** from an accredited college or university may be substituted for four (4) years of the required experience. OR An Associate's Degree** from an accredited college or university may be substituted for two (2) years of the required experience.
NOTE: If appointed, employee must be certified by the International Code Council (ICC) as a Certified Building Official during the probationary period. No probationary period may last longer than one year. If employees are not certified by the ICC during their probationary period, they must wait one year from the end of their probationary period or receive certification to be considered for rehire.
NOTE: Applicants hired into this job classification between April 1, 2025 and March 31, 2027 are exempted from the requirement to reside in Orleans Parish.
