Berkshire Hathaway GUARD Insurance Companies is seeking an Assistant Vice President (AVP), Workers' Compensation Claims to provide strategic leadership and operational oversight for a workers' compensation claims organization. This role is responsible for claim quality, technical excellence, financial performance, regulatory compliance, and talent development while ensuring efficient and effective claim resolution.

 

The AVP will partner with senior leadership and cross-functional business teams to drive operational success, improve claim outcomes, and support organizational objectives.

What You'll Do
  • Lead and develop Workers' Compensation Claims teams, promoting technical excellence, accountability, and high-quality claim handling.
  • Provide oversight of complex, litigated, catastrophic, and high-exposure workers' compensation claims.
  • Review and approve claim decisions, settlements, reserve changes, and other financial transactions within assigned authority.
  • Ensure sound investigation, medical management, reserving, litigation strategies, and resolution plans across claim inventories.
  • Monitor operational metrics including claim quality, closure rates, aging, litigation trends, and financial performance.
  • Identify claim trends, emerging exposures, and opportunities to improve operational effectiveness and claim outcomes.
  • Serve as a technical resource and escalation point for complex claim matters, including compensability issues, Medicare Set-Asides (MSAs), catastrophic injuries, and jurisdiction-specific regulations.
  • Coach, mentor, and develop claims leaders and professionals through ongoing feedback, training, and career development.
  • Partner with Underwriting, Actuarial, Risk Control, Legal, Data & Analytics, and other stakeholders to address loss trends and business objectives.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable workers' compensation laws, regulations, and company standards.
Qualifications
  • Extensive workers' compensation claims experience with progressive leadership responsibility.
  • Demonstrated expertise in claim investigation, evaluation, reserving, litigation management, negotiation, and resolution.
  • Strong understanding of workers' compensation regulations and claim-handling best practices.
  • Proven ability to lead teams, develop talent, and manage operational performance.
  • Excellent analytical, decision-making, communication, and negotiation skills.
  • Strong financial acumen and experience managing claim authority and reserve oversight.
  • Bachelor's degree required or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Professional designations, Juris Doctor (JD), or other industry credentials are a plus.
