Job Overview

Reporting to the Vice President of Student Affairs, the Associate Vice President and Dean of Students is responsible for the strategic direction and oversight of the Dean of Students Area. The Dean of Students Area includes the departments of Basic Needs, Civility, Conduct and Ethical Development, Cougar Care Network, Housing & Residential Education, New Student and Family Programs, ACE Scholar Services, College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP), Child Care Access Program (CCAMPIS), Educational Opportunity Program (EOP), Project Rebound, and TRIO Student Support Services (SSS). The Dean of Students is a co-chair of the CARE Team/Threat Assessment, Critical Issues Team and the Cross Functional Incident Team. The Dean of Students serves as a campus-wide resource regarding students' rights and responsibilities. The Dean of Students is an administrative designated CSUSM Corporation Board of Directors member. The AVP and Dean of Students provides advising to the Associated Students, Inc. Student Advocacy Committee.

The AVP and Dean of Students meets with students, student leaders, and family members; responds to student crises, issues and concerns; mobilizes campus resources to respond to emergencies, crisis situations and disruptions that involve students; maintains a visible presence at activities and programs; mediates conflict to promote outcomes that support student learning and well-being; guides, supports, and evaluates managers and office staff; facilitates assessment, program review, quality improvement, and the adoption of new technologies and strategies that are data-driven; manages budgets, personnel, and other resources in a manner that is efficient and demonstrates effective stewardship; and ensures compliance with applicable laws, policies, and regulations. As needed, the AVP and Dean of Students also serves as the Vice President's designee. As an integral member of the Student Affairs Senior Leadership Team (SLT) and the Student Affairs Leadership Team (SALT), the AVP and Dean of Students plays a crucial role in developing University policy and participating in institutional planning, evaluation, and assessment.

Associate Vice President and Dean of Students (Administrator III)

This is a full-time, exempt position in the Management Personnel Plan (MPP). MPP positions serve at the pleasure of the President.

Pay, Benefits, and Work Schedule

Anticipated Hiring Salary Range: $15,417 - $16,750 per month

CSU Classification Salary Range: $6,891 - $22,119 per month

Salary is commensurate with the background and experience of the individual selected.

This position is eligible for a broad range of benefits, including medical, dental, vision, life and disability insurances, retirement (CalPERS), tuition waiver, vacation and sick leave. In addition, 15 paid holidays are offered each year; 14 scheduled on specific days and a Personal Holiday that may be taken any time during the year.
