Automation Project Manager

About the Opportunity

Thompson Solutions Group is seeking an experienced Automation Project Manager to oversee the production and delivery of technical services for our customers. In this role, you will manage automation and control projects from initial scope development through implementation, working closely with business development team members, internal technical teams, customers, and supply partners.

You will also participate in on-site evaluations for job bids and engineering design reviews, helping develop practical automation and control solutions that meet customer needs.
What You'll Do

  • Define project scope, objectives, and deliverables based on customer and project requirements.
  • Prepare accurate cost estimates and pricing proposals.
  • Coordinate project staffing, schedules, and equipment needs.
  • Negotiate final purchase orders for equipment and services required within the project scope.
  • Organize project meetings and collaborate with team members to create effective work plans and schedules.
  • Provide customers with regular, consistent project updates.
  • Monitor project performance, identify opportunities for improvement, and adjust plans to meet completion timelines.
  • Work with internal teams to develop electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and control narratives using customer input, field observations, existing drawings, supply partner input, and other available information.
  • Support the implementation and integration of control systems to help ensure reliable operation.
  • Manage project-related contracts and approve accounts payable invoices, ensuring that costs are accurately assigned to each work order.
  • Apply industry best practices, techniques, and standards throughout project execution.

What We're Looking For

  • A strong background in project management within process control and automation, electrical construction, or a related field.
  • A bachelor's degree in a related field, significant relevant work experience, or a combination of education and experience.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, conflict resolution, and troubleshooting skills.
  • The ability to visualize a process or system from initial concept through deployment.
  • Flexibility and the ability to adapt to changing or challenging situations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with industrial or commercial automation and control hardware and software.
  • Experience with instrumentation and control methods.

Travel

  • Ability to travel to customer sites, job locations, and other business-related meetings as needed.
