DESCRIPTION

Description The University of California San Diego is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Assistant Athletic Trainer - Men's Basketball. In addition to Men's Basketball, this position will oversee the athletic training for an additional sport as assigned. The Basketball Athletic Trainer assists in the prevention, evaluation, treatment, and care of athletic injuries and medical concerns across UC San Diego's 24-sport NCAA Division I Intercollegiate Athletics program. In addition to Basketball, this position will oversee the athletic training for an additional sport as assigned. The role helps develop, coordinate, and administer a comprehensive sports medicine program for Intercollegiate Athletics and performs related professional and administrative duties as assigned. The Athletic Trainer is present at all home competitions and select away competitions, maintains standard office hours, and is present or on call for all practices.

Under the direction of the Associate Athletic Director of Sports Medicine and in collaboration with Athletic Performance staff to ensure safe design and implementation of fitness, nutrition, and conditioning programs tailored to individual student-athlete needs; makes injury referrals to appropriate medical personnel as needed; and reconditions and rehabilitates athletes on physician referral using appropriate physical agents and therapeutic devices. The role also includes communicating regularly with coaches on injured athletes' status, assisting in the operation of athletic training facilities, developing and implementing policies and protocols for equipment use, injury prevention and treatment, and screening/assessment procedures, helping supervise athletic training interns, and maintaining accurate records across all areas of athletic training operations - including injuries, medical insurance, medical history, injury referrals, conditioning programs and schedules, and supplies/equipment inventory.

The incumbent must follow the athletic philosophy consistent with that of the UC San Diego Athletic Department, NCAA, California Collegiate Athletic Association and a commitment to diversity in all of its forms.

Uses skills as a seasoned, experienced athletic training professional with a full understanding of industry practices and campus policies and procedures; resolves a wide range of issues. Demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor's or Graduate equivalent from a CAATE accredited athletic training education program; Master's preferred.
• Preferred two years post degree experience under the direct supervision of an NATABOC certified athletic trainer providing athletic training services in a collegiate or professional setting, with experience in men's or women's basketball or another high-demand, high-volume sport preferred.
• Thorough skills associated with athletic injury prevention and the administration of therapeutic modalities, devices, and rehabilitation techniques, as well as of first-aid, athletic equipment, and injury assessment and treatment. Level of knowledge and clinical experience in the prevention, evaluation, emergency management, treatment, rehabilitation, and return-to-sport of athletic injuries and illnesses.
• Evidence of proficiency in applying evidence-based athletic training techniques and therapeutic interventions, including but not limited to therapeutic exercise, manual therapy, taping and bracing, therapeutic modalities, and individualized rehabilitation programming, with demonstrated ability to manage the demands of high-volume, high-performance intercollegiate athletics
• Computer skills in programs relevant to job duties.
• Ability to maintain discretion and confidentiality in handling sensitive matters involving athletic injuries and treatments.
• Thorough knowledge of electronic medical records systems. Knowledge of local medical facilities for emergencies, referrals, specialty treatments, etc.
• For positions associated with Sports Medicine, must maintain current knowledge of applicable rules and standards of the affiliated athletic conference, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) or National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), as well as other associations and agencies to which the campus adheres, and, at all times, avoid any and all violations of these rules and standards.
• Strong ability to work in a highly collaborative manner with others, including athletes, team physicians, faculty, staff and others in the athletic department. Knowledge of sound coaching principles and techniques for a variety of sports as they apply to athletic injury prevention. Knowledge of local, regional and national athletic training organizations as they relate to and affect current UCSD athletic training programs.
• Strong skills necessary to communicate verbally and in writing. Skill in oral and written communications to insure clear and effective direction and communication. Ability to effectively manage competing priorities and maintain strong professional relationships within a fast-paced, high-demand athletic environment.
• Experience working collaboratively within an interdisciplinary sports medicine and athletic performance team, including scholar-athletes, team physicians, performance coaches, nutrition professionals, mental health professionals, coaches, and athletics staff.
• Knowledge of procurement function and campus budget requirements relating to athletic equipment and supplies.
• Strong ability to organize and prioritize work assignments and complete assignments within required timelines. Skill in organizing and prioritizing work to meet all deadlines and schedules. Knowledge of organizational and management principles as they apply to the development of athletic training operations.
• Ability to effectively manage competing clinical priorities and maintain high-quality healthcare delivery within a demanding intercollegiate athletics environment, including travel, variable practice and competition schedules.
• Strong organizational and interpersonal skills needed to work with a diverse client group. Demonstrated skill in developing and implementing individualized rehabilitation and return-to-sport programs in collaboration with physicians, physical therapists, performance coaches, and other healthcare professionals.
• Strong manual therapy skills applicable to orthopedics and sports medicine. Skill in the use of various athletic training aids (tape, wraps, modalities, exercise programs, massage, etc.) necessary to successful application of athletic training methods. Demonstrated skill in the application of standard first aid emergency procedures, including CPR.
• Knowledge of sound coaching principles and techniques for a variety of sports as they apply to athletic injury prevention.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

• Work schedule will include evenings, weekends and holidays.
• Must be able to travel to out-of-town meetings and athletic competitions.
