Summary of Position:

Reporting to the Provost, the Associate Provost for Academic Affairs provides strategic and operational leadership for faculty affairs, academic planning, instructional delivery, and academic integrity. The Associate Provost partners with the Provost, the Associate Provost for Assessment, Accreditation, and Compliance, the Executive Director of Online Programs, Department Chairs, and other academic leaders to advance academic quality, faculty effectiveness, student success, and institutional priorities.

The Associate Provost leads faculty recruitment and annual evaluation; Department Chair development; faculty workload, instructional staffing, and course scheduling; academic integrity; and designated student complaint resolution. The position provides strategic leadership, direction, and accountability for Faculty Development and Immersive Learning and Library Services.

The Associate Provost works closely with the Associate Provost for Assessment, Accreditation, and Compliance to align faculty and instructional work with institutional assessment, accreditation, academic policy, compliance, student success, and institutional planning. Essential duties and responsibilities:

Strategic Leadership and Academic Planning

  • Provide strategic leadership for faculty affairs, academic planning, instructional delivery, and academic integrity in alignment with the University's mission, strategic priorities, and student-success goals.
  • Establish priorities and advise the Provost on faculty affairs, academic operations, instructional delivery, academic quality, emerging needs, and improvement opportunities.
  • Partner with the Associate Provost for Assessment, Accreditation, and Compliance and other academic and administrative leaders to align academic initiatives with institutional priorities, student-success goals, and applicable requirements.
  • Represent the Provost's Office in institutional discussions, committees, and decision-making related to the assigned portfolio.Serve as the Provost's designee for assigned academic and operational matters and provide continuity of leadership during the Provost's absence.


Faculty Affairs, Department Chair Development, and Program/Faculty Support

  • Lead and coordinate faculty recruitment processes, including position planning, search committees, candidate evaluation, and recommendations for hiring, in collaboration with the Provost, Human Resources, and relevant academic leaders.
  • Lead the annual faculty evaluation process for all faculty ranks, ensuring clear expectations, consistent practices, timely completion, appropriate documentation, and constructive feedback. The Provost retains responsibility for faculty promotion and advancement evaluations.
  • Provide leadership, consultation, and professional development for Department Chairs to strengthen effective departmental leadership and support the consistent implementation of University policies and academic priorities.
  • Lead or co-lead Academic Council meetings, as assigned, and develop agendas that facilitate informed discussion, coordinated decision-making, and progress on institutional and Academic Affairs strategic priorities.
  • In collaboration with the Provost and the Director of Faculty Development and Immersive Learning, plan and lead faculty opening sessions each semester.
  • Advise the Provost, Department Chairs, and academic leaders on faculty-related policy, personnel, and organizational matters.
  • In collaboration with the Provost, Faculty Moderator, and appropriate shared governance bodies, coordinate the review and revision of the Faculty Handbook.
  • Ensure that academic programs align with relevant industry, professional, and workforce expectations, informed by input from employers, alumni, and industry professionals.
  • Ensure consistent interpretation and application of academic policies affecting faculty, instruction, and departmental operations, in partnership with the Associate Provost for Assessment, Accreditation, and Compliance, who chairs the Academic Policies Committee and maintains the Academic Catalog.
  • Review program review findings and annual institutional effectiveness reports to inform academic planning, program improvement, and resource priorities.


Faculty Development, Immersive Learning, and Library Services

  • Establish portfolio priorities and expectations, in consultation with the Director of Faculty Development and Immersive Learning and the Director of Library, for faculty development, instructional innovation, immersive learning, library services, instructional support, and related academic support functions.
  • Approve faculty development funds.
  • Ensure that appropriate resources, services, and partnerships support faculty effectiveness, student learning, instructional innovation, and academic access.
  • Partner with the Executive Director of Online Programs, Information Technology, Department Chairs, faculty, and other campus leaders to align faculty development, digital learning resources, instructional technology, accessibility, and support for online and hybrid instruction.
  • Use faculty, student, and service feedback; participation data; and institutional evidence to evaluate priorities and inform continuous improvement.


Academic Integrity and Student Complaint Resolution

  • Provide institutional leadership and oversight for academic integrity processes, including case review, hearings, outcomes, appeals, and related process improvement.
  • Provide faculty with guidance, training, and resources to prevent, identify, document, and address potential academic integrity violations.
  • Establish expectations for the fair, consistent, timely, and confidential resolution of assigned academic integrity cases, student academic complaints, and faculty-related academic matters; identify trends and recommend related policy, process, training, and educational improvements.


Faculty Workload and Course Scheduling

  • Provide strategic leadership, direction, and accountability for faculty workload, instructional staffing, course scheduling, and academic delivery.
  • Establish priorities and expectations for faculty assignments, course offerings, instructional modality, and schedule development in alignment with curriculum needs, enrollment demand, and institutional priorities.
  • Lead development of the academic course schedule in collaboration with Department Chairs, Associate Provost for Assessment, Accreditation, and Compliance, the Registrar, and other appropriate campus partners.
  • Use enrollment, scheduling, and student progression information to identify bottlenecks, inform resource decisions, and improve student access to required courses.
  • Recommend adjustments to course-delivery patterns, staffing models, and scheduling practices to strengthen instructional effectiveness, student progression, and resource alignment.
  • Partner with the Associate Provost for Assessment, Accreditation, and Compliance, the Registrar, Information Technology, Facilities, and other campus leaders to align academic scheduling, instructional technology, learning environments, and related operational priorities with academic needs and student progression.


Student Success and Institutional Collaboration

  • Partner with the Associate Provost for Assessment, Accreditation, and Compliance and Student Success staff to align faculty practice, academic delivery, course scheduling, and department-level initiatives with institutional student success priorities.
  • Promote faculty and chair engagement in efforts that strengthen course success, academic progression, persistence, completion, career readiness, and equitable student outcomes.
  • Collaborate with the Executive Director of Online Programs and relevant campus partners to address academic and instructional barriers affecting online and hybrid students.
  • Represent the Provost's Office on committees, task forces, and cross-functional initiatives as assigned.
  • Contribute to Academic Affairs planning, budgeting, resource allocation, process improvement, and institutional projects.
  • Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.


SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:Directly supervises the Director of Faculty Development and Immersive Learning and the Director of Library. Provides leadership to Department Chairs and faculty. May supervise additional staff, student employees, or interns as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Earned terminal degree in a relevant field.
  • A minimum of five years of progressively responsible academic administration leadership experiences (e.g., as a Dean, Associate Dean, Assistant Dean, Department Chair) in a complex college or university environment.
  • Experience with faculty evaluation or supervision, academic policy implementation, academic planning, and substantive administrative decision making.
  • Demonstrated experience leading faculty, academic programs, instructional operations, online learning, or related academic functions.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience leading faculty affairs, academic operations, academic planning, or other senior academic administrative functions in a college or university setting.
  • Experience supporting Department Chairs or other academic leaders in faculty supervision, academic operations, or departmental leadership.
  • Experience with faculty workload planning, course scheduling, instructional staffing, curriculum implementation, instructional design, and academic-integrity processes.
  • Experience supporting organizational change, policy implementation, and continuous improvement in higher education.
  • Experience working in a private, tuition-dependent college or university.
