Position Description

Brookhaven National Laboratory seeks an accomplished leader to serve as Associate Project Manager (APM) for the EIC Detector Subproject. The APM is responsible for planning, integrating, and executing the Detector Subproject within the approved technical, cost, schedule, and risk baseline. The position reports to the Physics Division Director, and to the EIC Project Manager for project execution. The successful candidate will work in close partnership with the EIC Co-Associate Directors for the Experimental Program, the ePIC Collaboration, DOE, and national and international partner institutions.

The Associate Project Manager partners with the EIC Co-Associate Directors for the Experimental Program to define and maintain the detector priorities consistent with the scientific vision. The Associate Project Manager is responsible for translating those scientific objectives into an executable DOE project and delivering the approved Detector Subproject.

Key Organizational Relationships
  • Reports to the Physics Division Director to facilitate coordination of work towards the Detector Subproject within the Division.
  • Reports to the EIC Project Manager for all project execution responsibilities.
  • Partners with the EIC Co-Associate Directors for the Experimental Program on defining scientific requirements and optimization of priority decisions.
  • Develops constructive partnerships with technical and management teams at Jefferson Lab as major contributors, and with other EIC project partner institutions.
  • Serves as Brookhaven's project management interface with the ePIC Collaboration.
  • Coordinates execution across EIC Project systems such as Accelerator, Infrastructure, Project Controls, Procurement, and ES&H.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Project Leadership
  • Deliver the Detector Subproject within the approved scope, cost, schedule and technical baseline.
  • Provide leadership for integrated planning, execution, installation and commissioning activities.
  • Lead project risk management, interface management and execution planning.
DOE Project Management
  • Develop and maintain integrated schedules, resource-loaded plans and execution strategies.
  • Manage scope definition, baseline change control and contingency in consultation with the EIC Co-Associate Directors for the Experimental Program .
  • Support DOE Critical Decisions, Independent Project Reviews and external project reviews.
  • Facilitate execution of institutional responsibilities, procurements and international in-kind contributions.
Technical Integration
  • Translate detector requirements established by the Co-Associate Directors and the ePIC Collaboration into executable project scope.
  • Evaluate technical alternatives for impacts on scope, cost, schedule and risk for decisions consistent with the change control thresholds.
  • Manage technical interfaces among detector systems and with other EIC subprojects.
Collaboration and External Engagement
  • Coordinate with collaboration leadership regarding deliverables, interfaces and institutional responsibilities.
  • Represent the Detector Subproject during DOE EIC Project reviews and ePIC collaboration meetings.
  • Build effective relationships with universities, laboratories and international partners.
People Leadership
  • Lead multidisciplinary matrixed engineering, scientific, software and technical teams.
  • Promote safety, accountability, inclusion and continuous improvement.
Project Accountability
  • Ensure successful delivery of EIC Detector Subproject scope while meeting DOE expectations for technical performance, scientific capability, cost, schedule, quality and safety.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Physics, Engineering or related technical discipline (advanced degree preferred).
  • Minimum of ten (10) years of progressively responsible experience in experimental nuclear or particle physics, detector development, scientific research, engineering, scientific computing, or a related technical discipline, including at least six (6) years of leadership experience managing scientific, engineering, technical, or multidisciplinary organizations.
  • Extensive experience leading major scientific or engineering research projects.
  • Extensive experience managing projects under DOE Order 413.3B or comparable major project governance.
  • Demonstrated success managing cost, schedule, technical performance and project risk.
  • Experience leading complex multi-institutional and international collaborations.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to working safely, acting ethically, and taking personal accountability for operational excellence.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with DOE laboratories and Office of Science projects managed under DOE O413.3B.
  • Experience with large detector construction projects.
  • Experience coordinating international in-kind contributions.

Other Information
  • Domestic and international travel required.
