DescriptionOverviewPart of Global Medical Affairs, the Medical Excellence team is a cross-functional group consisting of Scientific Communications, Medical Engagement, Strategic Enablement, and Medical Operations. This team ensures the highest standards of medical practice and operational efficiency. The primary functions of the Medical Excellence team include developing and driving the scientific communication strategy, providing accurate and timely medical information, optimizing medical engagement models, ensuring the necessary skills and knowledge for internal and external engagement, and overseeing the design and management of visualization tools and dashboards. By fostering a culture of continuous improvement and innovation, the Medical Excellence team aims to maximize the impact of medical initiatives, improve patient outcomes, and ensure regulatory compliance.
The Scientific Communications team is responsible for defining the Scientific Narrative for each product and for developing and driving Scientific Communication Strategy to disseminate scientific and clinical data. At the tactical level, Scientific Communications oversees the delivery of best-in-class publications, including but not limited to abstracts, posters, oral presentations, manuscripts and plain language summaries.
SummaryThe Associate Director (AD) functions as a key member of the Scientific Communications team, ensuring high quality scientific outputs with appropriate utilization of resources. The AD will work with the Director of Scientific Communications to develop and implement scientific communication strategy, manage the scientific communication plan for assigned product(s) and therapeutic areas, and oversee scientific messaging for marketed and clinical products.
Key ResponsibilitiesResponsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
Publication Strategy and Planning
• Develop and ensure timely execution of the scientific communication plans for BioMarin's programs in Fabry disease and Pompe disease
• Contribute to development and implementation of scientific messaging and maintain the Scientific Communication Platforms
• Ensure cross-functional alignment of messaging and strategies to address gaps
• Develop expert knowledge of product- and disease-specific literature and oversee literature and gap analyses to support scientific message development and publication strategy
• Organize and implement expert meetings necessary for publication strategy development; collaborate with colleagues and external experts to develop agenda and content, manage vendors, and attend and present as needed
• Facilitate the external/independent development of treatment and management guidelines
Publication Content Creation
• Research, draft, and edit scientific and medical manuscripts, abstracts, posters, and presentations
• Manage agency and/or contract medical writers and/or graphic designers, as needed
• Ensure all scientific communications outputs meet the highest standards of medical/scientific integrity
• Ensure activities adhere to authorship and publication guidelines as stipulated by ICMJE and GPP 2022
• Assist with maintenance and reconciliation activities within publication development database
Other
• Respond to internal and external questions about any scientific communications for the product areas
• Participate in cross-functional team meetings to share scientific communication planning status and issues, and maintain awareness of overall scientific communication plan
• Provide support for management of the Scientific Communications budget
Education & Experience- Advanced degree (MS or higher) in life or health sciences is required
- 7 or more years of relevant experience in scientific communications, publication planning and/or medical writing within a pharmaceutical company or medical writing agency
- 2 or more years managing direct reports is preferred
