The Brown University Health Academic Center and the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Rhode Island and Miriam Hospitals in Providence, RI is recruiting an Associate Director of Clinical Chemistry. As an academic non-profit medical institution, the successful applicant will also receive an appointment at the Warren Alpert School of Medicine at Brown University at the rank of Assistant Professor or higher. The successful candidate will interpret clinical tests and offer expertise in general chemistry, immunology, blood gases, toxicology, and mass spectrometry. Expertise and interest in Point of Care Testing are preferred.

The role of Assistant/Associate Director of Clinical Chemistry will provide technical and administrative assistance in the Clinical Chemistry Laboratory. In addition, the incumbent will provide quality control of all assays performed in the chemistry laboratory, provide activity reports, and ensure up-to-date knowledge of new technologies for the laboratory. The incumbent will participate in quality control and quality assurance programs as they relate to clinical chemistry. In addition, the assistant/associate director of chemistry will collaboratively oversee certain aspects of the point-of-care testing program and send-out department, as delegated by the system medical director of clinical laboratories. The Assistant/Associate Director of Clinical Chemistry will also participate in the activities of the department including conferences with clinical departments in the hospital and at the Brown University School of Medicine.

The incumbent will be expected to develop and maintain an independent research program in the general area of clinical chemistry. The incumbent will also be expected to participate in the teaching of residents and fellows in the Department and in the teaching of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine courses and clerkships to medical students at Brown University and to provide instructional support to the medical technologist training program in the Department of Pathology.

Qualifications

The applicant should possess an MD, DO, MBBS, or PhD. Incumbents with an MD, DO, or MBBS should be board certified (or board eligible) by the American Board of Pathology in Clinical Pathology or AP/CP, with subspecialty certification in Chemical Pathology or equivalent experience, and a 3-year experience requirement for the Associate Director level. Incumbents with a Ph.D. degree must be certified or eligible for certification by the American Association of Clinical Chemistry or the National Registry of Certified Chemists, with a 5 year experience requirement for the Associate Director level. Candidates must have experience directing a high-complexity laboratory, preferably in a university hospital or comparable institution. Candidates applying for this position at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor must have reputation and scholarly achievements appropriate to this level.
