Associate Attorney - Workers' Compensation and Labor & Employment

Location: Abingdon, VA (On-site)

Job Type: Full-time | Associate Opportunity | 0-3 Years of Legal Experience; Workers' Compensation and/or Labor & Employment Experience or Demonstrated Interest Preferred

What You'll Do

In this role, you will advise and represent clients in both workers' compensation and labor & employment matters from initial assessment through resolution. Your workers' compensation work may include evaluating claims and compensability, reviewing medical records and expert opinions, developing case strategy, preparing pleadings, participating in hearings and mediations, and advising on exposure and return-to-work considerations. Your labor & employment work may include researching workplace-law questions, drafting position statements and other submissions, assisting with employment-related disputes and investigations, and counseling employers on policies, compliance, employee relations, and practical risk mitigation.

You will be supported by experienced attorneys across both practices who are invested in your growth, with opportunities to take on substantive workers' compensation and labor & employment work, strengthen client relationships, and advance your career.

What You'll Bring

Key qualifications include a J.D. from an accredited law school, an active Virginia bar license or eligibility to waive in, and 0-3 years of legal experience or demonstrated interest in workers' compensation and labor & employment. Candidates should bring strong legal research, writing, analysis, and communication skills, along with the ability to learn claim and case management, evaluate records and workplace issues, communicate effectively with clients and other stakeholders, and develop practical legal strategies.

  • Knowledge of or interest in Virginia workers' compensation law, claims handling, litigation procedure, medical-record analysis, and employer/insurer representation; related law firm experience or a clerkship is a plus
  • Knowledge of or interest in labor & employment law, including workplace policies, compliance, employee relations, investigations, administrative proceedings, and employment-related disputes
  • Strong verbal communication, legal research, and writing skills, with the ability to analyze records and workplace issues and communicate effectively with clients, employers, claims professionals, and other stakeholders
  • A client-centered approach, sound judgment, attention to detail, and a collaborative mindset


At the time of posting, the expected hiring range for this position is $100,000 to $130,000. An individual's placement within the range will be determined based on relevant factors, including but not limited to education, training, skills, licensure and certifications, practice area, experience, internal equity, and market data.
