Assistant Superintendent of CTE K-12

The purpose of this position is to have an individual responsible for supervising and implementing the provisions of Career Technical Education programs, innovation pathways at the high school level as well as the college and career programming in the Waltham Public Schools in accordance with State and Federal regulations and mandates. Working in partnership with the educational leaders of the Waltham Schools, the Assistant Superintendent assures that the curriculum and instruction meets the educational and developmental needs of the students and staff and is in alignment with DESE CTE program guidelines.

Description of Duties:

  1. Supervises and implements instructional programs in accordance with school, district federal and state initiatives.
  2. Supervises and coordinates programs for students in compliance with statutes and regulations.
  3. Supervises and evaluates the Director of CTE
  4. Implements and monitors system-wide initiatives in career and technical education.
  5. Prepares all state and federal reports in career and technical education.
  6. Assures the continuity and sequential order of curriculum.
  7. Supports the application and implementation of innovative pathways programming
  8. Measures student achievement in vocational and technical education and makes recommendations for improvement.
  9. Works collaboratively with the Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction in identifying CTE opportunities throughout K-12 programming
  10. Oversight of future after dark CTE programming
  11. Supports the identification and ordering of appropriate instructional materials and equipment for classrooms and shops.
  12. Provides guidance and support to high school academic counselors for college and career readiness
  13. Remains up to date with DESE graduation requirements and college and career readiness programming
  14. Supports the Counselor of Early College in support of early college planning and partnerships with local universities.
  15. Oversees and submits a budget for the department.
  16. Assists WHS Principal and Director of CTE in hiring, supervising and evaluating all relevant Career and Technical Education.
  17. Communicates the practices of the Career and Technical Education Department to parents, administrators, staff, and the public.
  18. Demonstrates professional growth and self-improvement.
  19. Develops positive school-community relations.
  20. Exhibits and facilitates human relations and communication skills.
  21. Communicates in a timely and effective manner with staff, administrators, students and parents.

  23. Performs other duties as directed by the Superintendent.


Qualifications:

Education, Training and Experience
  • A Master's Degree in Education or in content area
  • Valid Massachusetts State Certification as Assistant Superintendent/Superintendent and/or as Director of Vocational Programs.
  • At least five (5) years experience in the field of public education, including experience in administration and teaching.
Knowledge Required
  • Thorough knowledge of State Curriculum Frameworks as related to Career and Technology/Engineering Education.
  • Work collaboratively to review/revise CTE courses that align with current state standards.
  • Exhibit comprehensive knowledge of, and experience with effective presentation strategies.
  • Thorough knowledge of Chapter 74 programming, Perkins grants and other grant programs related to CTE and college and career readiness
  • Communicate and collaborate effectively with diverse groups and audiences.
  • Understand DESE graduation requirements, specifically MassCore
  • Promote flexibility and resiliency through thinking critically and creatively.
  • Understand and guide practice in accordance with applicable state and federal laws, regulations, and compliance requirements governing college and career programs in Massachusetts.
  • Communicate orally and in writing sufficient to express ideas, thoughts, and instructions clearly to partners, community, staff, parents and students.
  • Analyze complex situations and prepare response alternatives for consideration by decision- making groups.

Abilities Required
  • Ability to plan, assign, supervise, and evaluate CTE programming and evaluation of the Director of CTE
  • Ability to deal with staff effectively.
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing to staff, students, the superintendent of schools, other administrators and parents.
  • Ability to prepare and administer a budget in a cost effective manner.
  • Ability to prepare and submit pertinent grant applications and reports
  • Ability to work independently and carry out assigned projects to their completion.

Supervision:

Supervision Scope

Performs varied and responsible duties with considerable latitude for independent judgment and action while planning, administering and executing duties. Works independently and in concert with others.

Supervision Given and Received

Works under the general direction of the Superintendent of Schools. Hires, supervises and evaluates all career & technical education staff, including the Director of CTE. Is evaluated by the Superintendent and is a member of the Executive Team.

Salary: $175,000-$190,000

DESE license Assistant Superintendent/Superintendent required.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:

Highly diverse and complex duties. Must have high tolerance for change and the ability to work on several projects and assignments concurrently. Strong interpersonal skills required in working with diverse groups. Must have initiative and assume responsibility for working productively with minimal supervision.

Must have the ability to sit for extended periods of time in a busy office environment; exhibit manual dexterity to enter data into a computer terminal; to see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids; hear and understand speech at normal levels and on the telephone; speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly in person and on the telephone; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; physical agility to lift up to 25 pounds.

Salary Range: $175,000-$190,000 Commensurate with experience and qualifications.

12 Month position, non-represented
