The Medical College of Georgia, Immunology Center of Georgia at Augusta University is currently seeking a faculty member as an Assistant Research Scientist, Research Scientist, or a Principal Research Scientist, who will also hold an administrative post as the Director of the Core iPSC and Organoid Facility. The faculty member will provide overarching executive leadership, scientific guidance, and operational management across induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) platforms, 3D organoid engineering, organ-on-chip, functional genome editing, and state-of-the-art cell culture applications. The ideal candidate is a distinguished scientist possessing deep expertise in stem cell biology, organoid engineering, and translational applications. They will demonstrate a proven track record of strategic leadership, operational management, and cross-functional collaboration within complex research environments. This position does not meet the requirements to be on a tenure track.
Responsibilities
Scientific Leadership -
Strategic Vision: Formulate and execute the strategic direction for the Core iPSC and Organoid Facility to support cutting-edge institutional research.
Model Innovation: Oversee the design, validation, and optimization of robust iPSC, organoid, and advanced cellular models.
Technology Integration: Identify, evaluate, and integrate emerging platforms and methodologies to continuously elevate core capabilities.
Expert Consultation: Provide high-level scientific guidance to principal investigators on experimental design, platform selection, and downstream applications.
Operational Management -
Core Administration: Direct all day-to-day administrative and technical operations of the core facility.
SOP Governance: Standardize and maintain rigorous Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to ensure operational consistency.
Workflow Optimization: Manage laboratory workflows, scheduling, project pipelines, and resource allocation for maximum efficiency.
Financial Stewardship: Oversee budget management, cost-recovery models, pricing structures, and procurement processes.
Asset Management: Ensure the proactive maintenance, calibration, and optimal utilization of specialized instrumentation.
Personnel Leadership & Development -
Talent Management: Recruit, mentor, and evaluate technical staff to foster a high performance workforce.
Culture: Cultivate a collaborative and innovation-driven team culture.
Professional Growth: Promote continuous learning, professional development, and technical skill enhancement for facility staff.
Strategic Research Collaboration -
Cross-Departmental Partnerships: Cultivate strong collaborative relationships with internal and external research groups.
Grant & Proposal Support: Partner with investigators on grant applications, technical writeups, and strategic research initiatives.
Program Acceleration: Drive the growth of innovative research programs leveraging state-of-the-art iPSC and organoid technologies.
Institutional Representation: Serve as the core facility's ambassador at institutional meetings, symposiums, and international scientific conferences.
Quality Assurance & Regulatory Compliance -
Regulatory Compliance: Guarantee strict adherence to institutional, state, federal, and international regulatory mandates.
Safety & Documentation: Maintain rigorous biosafety standards, quality assurance protocols, and comprehensive laboratory documentation.
Ethical Governance: Ensure compliant and ethical oversight regarding the acquisition, handling, and utilization of human-derived specimens and stem cell lines.
Quality Management Systems: Implement end-to-end Quality Management Systems (QMS) across all core service offerings to ensure high-fidelity deliverables.
Required Qualifications
Ph.D., M.D., M.D./Ph.D. or equivalent in Cell Biology, Stem Cell Biology, Developmental Biology, Biomedical Sciences, or a closely related discipline.
7+ years of progressive post-degree research experience in stem cell biology and advanced cell culture models.
Technical Mastery: Demonstrated hands-on expertise in human iPSC derivation, maintenance, lineage-specific differentiation, and organoid system engineering.
Core Administration: Proven track record of managing laboratory operations, shared resources, or core facilities in an academic or industry setting.
Scientific Leadership: Strong peer-reviewed publication record demonstrating high-impact research contributions and scientific authority.
Personnel Management: Direct experience supervising, mentoring, and leading technical and scientific teams.
Communication: Exceptional written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, with a track record of effective cross-disciplinary collaboration.
Preferred Qualifications
Genome Editing: Hands-on experience with CRISPR/Cas9 technologies, advanced genetic modification and organoid development strategies.
Advanced Analytics: Proficiency in high-content imaging, and/or multi-omics analytical frameworks.
Translation & Manufacturing: Familiarity with Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) standards or clinical-grade cell line production.
Financial & Grant Strategy: Demonstrated success in grant writing, proposal development, and complex core facility budget management.
Shift/Salary/Benefits
This position is fiscal year based and works year-round.
The intended work commitment or full-time equivalent (FTE) for this position is 1.0 and considered full-time.
Salary and compensation is commensurate with education, experience, and achievements. The salary is subject to availability of funds.
