Job Description
Assistant Professor of Specialty Dental Medicine plays a vital role in supporting patient care delivery, student clinical education, and the daily operations of the dental school clinic. This individual provides technical expertise in specialized areas of dentistry (e.g., prosthodontics, periodontics, oral surgery, endodontics), assists faculty in clinical instruction, ensures regulatory compliance, and helps maintain high standards of safety, efficiency, and patient service. The Clinical Specialist serves as a key resource for both students and clinical faculty
Required Qualifications
Dental degree (e.g., DDS, DMD) with specialization or advanced training. Minimum of 3 years of clinical experience in a dental practice or academic setting preferred. Strong knowledge of specialty dental procedures, instrumentation, and materials. Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
Prior experience working in an academic dental clinic. Familiarity with electronic health record systems (e.g., AxiUm). BLS certification and knowledge of emergency response protocols. Experience in mentoring or training dental students or staff

Clinical Support and Oversight: Provide expert support in designated specialty areas (e.g., removable prosthodontics, surgical setups, implant workflows). Prepare and maintain instruments, materials, and supplies needed for clinical procedures. Ensure treatment rooms and equipment are properly set up and maintained for optimal functionality

Student Instruction and Guidance: Assist students during clinical sessions by reinforcing proper techniques and procedural protocols. Support faculty in evaluating students clinical performance and readiness for procedures. Promote professionalism, infection control, and patient-centered care among student providers

Specialty Clinic Operations: Coordinate specialty clinics and assist in managing appointment flow, faculty coverage, and case follow-up. Assist with documentation, case presentations, and interdepartmental referrals as needed

Quality Assurance and Compliance: Ensure adherence to clinic policies, infection control guidelines, HIPAA, and OSHA regulations. Participate in clinical audits, chart reviews, and safety checks. Report and assist in resolving clinical issues or patient concerns in a timely and professional manner

Training and Calibration: Participate in faculty and staff calibration sessions related to clinical protocols and evaluation criteria. Provide onboarding and continuing education support for new staff and students on specialty procedures and workflows

Inventory and Equipment Management: Monitor inventory levels of materials and supplies for assigned areas; assist in ordering and restocking. Ensure proper operation and maintenance of clinical and specialty equipment

Interprofessional and Collaborative Support: Work closely with faculty, administrative teams, and dental assistants to support efficient and collaborative care. Serve as a liaison between clinical and academic departments when needed
