Job Summary The Assistant Fire Chief shall serve under the direction and supervision of the Fire Chief and is a member of the Fire District's Executive leadership team. In the absence of the Fire Chief shall assume the duties of the Fire Chief until his/her return. Shall provide leadership and assists the Fire Chief in administrative direction for the Fire District. Be responsible for the day-to-day operations, functions, and personnel, including fire suppression, emergency medical response services, emergency preparedness planning, and programs as assigned across the organization. Additionally, the Assistant Fire Chief ensures open and professional communications with the Fire District, partner agencies, and the public in matters of safety and concern related to district activities. He/She also keeps the Fire Chief advised of significant activities, issues, and concerns affecting the Fire District.
Distinguishing Characteristics This is an administrative level position within the Fire District. The Assistant Fire Chief serves as the primary operational leader and is responsible for the administration, coordination, and oversite of Fire District operations, personnel, and assigned functional divisions. The position exercises broad authority over daily operations and organizational functions and acts on behalf of the Fire Chief as assigned.
The Assistant Fire Chief oversees and directs Battalion Chiefs in support of Fire District Operations. Additional guidance is provided by the district's Fire and EMS Policies, Procedures and Protocols, Standard Operating Guidelines, the Employee Manual, and other applicable regulations, and federal and state law. Work is evaluated annually by the Fire Chief utilizing the districts performance evaluation system
Licensing, Education, & Other Requirements Any combination of training, education, and experience that would provide the required knowledge and abilities. A typical way to gain the required knowledge and ability is:
- Associates degree in Fire Science, Public Administration, or a related field, plus
- Twelve (12) years of progressively responsible experience in the fire service, which includes
- Three (3) years of direct supervisory experience at the rank of Battalion Chief of Operations or higher.
- Nevada, ProBoard or IFSAC Fire Officer 2
- Nevada ProBoard or IFSAC Fire Officer 3 within 12 months (Variances may be given by the Chief depending on class availability)
- Incident Safety Officer Certification
- Current or past NWCG Red Card qualified Wildland Firefighter I or equivalent
- Nevada or IFSAC Firefighter II certification.
- Current CPR Health Provider certification
- State of Nevada or Nationally Accredited EMT/Advanced or Paramedic certification.
- State of Nevada or International Code Council Fire Inspector I certification, within 12 months.
- Nevada or IFSAC Fire Service Instructor II
- Nevada or IFSAC Hazardous Materials Incident Commander
- NIMS ICS certification: 100, 200, 300, 400, 700, 800.
Preferred Certifications:- Bachelor's degree or higher in Fire Science, Public Administration, Emergency Management or a related field is strongly preferred.
Licenses and other Requirement:- Pass a criminal background investigation.
- Valid State of Nevada driver's license with good driving record. Must obtain within Six (6) months of appointment to Assistant Chief.
- Must reside within Storey County or a contiguous county within 6 months of employment, and up to 25 road miles of the County border.
- Ability to meet and maintain medical, physical, and certification standards required for the position.
