POSITION SUMMARY:

The Assistant Director, under the guidance of the Executive Director of Transportation, is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the bus transportation system. This includes managing a team of bus drivers, bus monitors, and other transportation staff. The Assistant Director is also responsible for assessing various transportation-related activities, such as incidents, complaints, accidents, and resolving them in accordance with district guidelines while prioritizing the safety of students and staff. Additionally, the Assistant Director supports the Executive Director in planning, directing, managing, and overseeing departmental budgets, activities, and operations to ensure safe and efficient transportation of students. The Assistant Director also monitors and evaluates the performance of the transportation staff, ensuring compliance with all legal requirements. This position reports to the Executive Director of Transportation.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Assists the Executive Director of Transportation in service as a front-line support system for all internal and external stakeholders. Oversees direct reports (Coordinators, Managers, Supervisors, Drivers, and Bus Monitors, etc.) Manages staff development, certification, progressive discipline, and remediation of all staff. Ensures department expenditures are within limits as approved. Monitors compliance with policies and laws.

Assist in maintaining the transportation program that meets all the requirements of the daily instructional program, extracurricular activities, special populations, summer school, and field trips in compliance with federal, state, and local regulations and consistent with Clayton County Public School System's policies and procedures. Managing, maintaining, and sustaining a vehicular fleet that meets county, state, and national standards.

Facilitates and coordinates investigations, as well as proposes solutions, regarding any issues that arise with routes, drivers, school administrators, and parents.

All other duties, as assigned and required, in order to perform the above services.

KEY JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Bachelor's degree in a related field required.

Minimum of five (5) years progressive experience in transportation management, including three (3) years of supervisory experience required.

Makes recommendations that affect the operations of the district.

Valid GA driver's license required. Valid Georgia CDL license with required passenger (P) and school bus driver (S) endorsements preferred.

High level of judgment: supervisor will review established broad objectives and approve executive-level decisions.

Requires regular, frequent contact with internal and external personnel of influence and decision-making responsibility to discuss issues of moderate importance; requires continuing contact with officials at higher levels. Excellent interpersonal skills are required for working with inter-organizational teams.

Responsibility for the Welfare of Others: Constant (Daily) - to exercise the duty of care and protection of the health, safety, security, welfare, well-being, and best interests of the district's various stakeholders.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Various office settings - May be required to respond to an emergency in the field.
May require frequent travel for off-site training locations and school site visits.

Normal office setting, Bus barn, Maintenance shop, Outside, etc. as needed.
May be required to work additional hours to meet the operational needs of the
Transportation Department.

PHYSICAL EFFORT:

On most occasions sitting at a desk or table; intermittently sitting, standing, or stooping. Moderate lifting or carrying; fifty (50) lbs. or less.

NOTE: This is a Grade 31, 225-day position with a salary range of $86,894.00 - $106,522. Final salary placement within this range is determined based on individual credentials, years of relevant experience, and the guidelines outlined in the CCPS Compensation Handbook found here.
