Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking an Assistant Director for the Office of Disability Services. The Assistant Director reports to the Senior Director for the Office of Disability Services. This position is responsible for ensuring the delivery of reasonable accommodations to all eligible students at Rutgers University- New Brunswick campus in accordance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1998, the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, and the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments of 2008.

Among the key duties of the position are the following:
  • Assists with managing the Office of Disability Services.
  • Oversees the coordinators and providing them with professional development opportunities
  • Maintains up-to-date professional knowledge and skills.
  • Serves as a liaison with campus partners and provides expertise and training for all members of the University community regarding disability issues.
  • Develops, coordinates, and implements departmental guidelines and procedures, as well as develop and conduct trainings and workshops for administrators, faculty, staff, and students about the responsibilities for advocacy, accommodations and accessibility.
  • Prepares and reviews various reports and analysis denoting progress, adverse trends, and takes appropriate action related to the Office for Disability Services.
  • Collaborates with their co-Assistant Director to ensure consistency, efficiency and support for all members of the department.
  • Assists the senior director in cross-collaboration on disability issues throughout the Rutgers community to bring about cultural change to the University.
  • Represents the Office of Disability Services on various university, state, and local committees, boards, and associations.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience
  • Master's Degree, or equivalent experience, in one of the related fields: Counselor Education, Special Education, Counseling Psychology, or Education.
  • A minimum of two years supervisory and administration experience (preferably in a disability services office in higher education) and at least five years experience working with students with disabilities in higher education in a disability services office.


Certifications/Licenses

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Advanced knowledge of the federal and state laws pertaining to students with disabilities in a post-secondary educational setting, particularly subpart E of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, and how it differs from Subpart D, which pertains to institutional obligations on behalf of students with disabilities in the K-12 setting. This key distinction allows post-secondary institutions to advance access concerns on behalf of students with disabilities, whereas K-12 institutions are responsible for insuring success, a much higher threshold.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Ability to analyze, monitor, and implement legislation, regulations and policies regarding federal and state laws pertaining to individuals with disabilities in higher education.
  • Extensive experience working with students with various disabilities in a higher education disability services office.
  • Ability to supervise the handling of confidential disability related documentation and records according to federal and state laws.
  • Must be comfortable working with multiple constituencies in a complex and diverse organizational environment.
  • Expertise in training and public speaking a must as well as skilled in researching and reviewing literature to develop training programs, workshops and webinars.
  • Strong background in student development and advising.


Equipment Utilized
  • Knowledge and familiarity with various assistive and adaptive technologies.
  • Strong computer skills and effective use of various software and hardware programs used in a multi-function disability office including but not limited to database systems, email, social networking, MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Knowledge of Web 2.0 technology and accessible technologies and information.
