General Summary

The Assistant Director of Programs & Recreation Impact provides strategic leadership, direction, and oversight for parish-wide recreation programs and services that extend beyond individual facilities or regions. This position is responsible for ensuring programs are aligned with BREC's mission, strategic priorities, community needs, accreditation standards, and industry best practices while maximizing community impact and service excellence.
Requirements and Job Specifications

Education Required: Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university.
Preferred : Master's degree from an accredited college or university

Area of Study (major) Preferred: Recreation Management, Education, Business Administration, or a closely related field.

Certification(s) Required: Professional membership with NRPA within 30 days of hire.
Preferred: Certified Park and Recreation Professional through NRPA

License(s) Required: Valid LA Driver's License

Years of Relevant Work Experience: Minimum five (5) years of progressive experience in education and public programming with at least three (3) years in supervisory capacity.
Preferred: Ten (10) or more years of related experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Functions and Duties

Essential Functions and Duties:
  • Provide leadership for the planning, development, implementation, evaluation, and continuous improvement of assigned parish-wide recreation programs and services.
  • Establish and maintain consistent program standards, operating procedures, performance measures, and documentation practices that support quality service delivery, participant safety, inclusion, accessibility, customer service, accountability, and CAPRA accreditation compliance.
  • Monitor and evaluate program effectiveness through data analysis, participation trends, community feedback, performance metrics, and operational reviews to identify opportunities for growth, innovation, and improved community impact.
  • Ensure programs are accessible, equitable, and responsive to the diverse recreational needs of East Baton Rouge Parish residents, including underserved populations and individuals with limited access to traditional recreation opportunities.
  • Lead accreditation-related efforts for assigned program areas, including documentation, reporting, evidence collection, self-assessments, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Collaborate with internal departments and regional recreation teams to ensure effective program delivery, organizational consistency, resource coordination, and positive participant experiences.
  • Develop and maintain partnerships with community organizations, educational institutions, municipalities, nonprofit agencies, sponsors, volunteers, and other stakeholders to enhance services, expand program access, and strengthen community engagement.
  • Assist with budget planning and administration, grants, contracts, purchasing, resource allocation, and long-range strategic planning for assigned program areas.
  • Prepare reports, presentations, impact analyses, and recommendations for leadership, partners, advisory groups, and public stakeholders.
  • Supervise, mentor, develop, and evaluate assigned staff while fostering a culture of professionalism, accountability, collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement.
  • Represent BREC in professional, community, partnership, accreditation, and public engagement activities.

Supplemental Information

Full-time position; schedule may vary within framework of 8 hours per day, 5 days per week; lunch break daily; Some evening and weekend hours as necessary; overtime as required.
