General Summary The Assistant Director of Community Sports & Active Recreation provides strategic leadership, management, and oversight of BREC's community sports, active recreation programs, leagues, partnerships, and related facilities. This position is responsible for planning, developing, implementing, and evaluating a diverse portfolio of recreation opportunities, including youth and adult athletics, tennis, pickleball, disc golf, tournaments, open play, and other active recreation initiatives.
The position establishes and maintains operational standards for program quality, customer service, safety, facility utilization, league operations, and partner accountability while promoting consistent and effective service delivery. The Assistant Director collaborates with internal departments, community organizations, schools, municipalities, and recreation providers to expand access, strengthen partnerships, and meet evolving community recreation needs.
As a key member of the Recreation leadership team, this position oversees staff, budgets, performance measures, and operational planning while advancing opportunities that support health, wellness, youth development, community engagement, and quality of life throughout East Baton Rouge Parish.
Requirements and Job Specifications Required Education: Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university.
Area of Study (major) Required: Recreation Management, Sports Administration, Public Administration, Business Administration, Community Development, Organizational Leadership, or a closely related field.
Preferred: Master's degree from an accredited college or university.
Certification(s) Required: CPR/AED/First Aid Certification
Certified Park and Recreation Professional or ability to obtain within 12 months of employment.
License(s) Required:Valid LA driver's license.
Years of Relevant Work Experience: Minimum of five (5) to seven (7) years of progressively responsible experience in recreation, athletics, sports programming, facility operations, or public-sector recreation management, including supervisory experience.
Preferred: Eight (8) or more years of experience in recreation, athletics, sports operations, facility management, or public-sector recreation leadership.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:- Knowledge of parks and recreation administration, community sports, active recreation programming, athletics management, league operations, tournaments, and sports facility operations.
- Knowledge of youth and adult recreation programming, inclusive recreation practices, volunteer and coach development, customer service, risk management, and community engagement.
- Knowledge of current recreation trends, including multisport participation, adaptive recreation, active aging, pickleball, tennis, disc golf, action sports, and emerging recreation opportunities.
- Knowledge of budgeting, program evaluation, performance measurement, partnership development, and operational planning.
- Skill in strategic planning, program development, leadership, staff supervision, and organizational management.

Functions and Duties Essential Functions and Duties:- Provide leadership, strategic direction, and operational oversight for community sports, active recreation programs, leagues, partnerships, services, and related facilities.
- Develop, implement, and maintain standards, policies, and procedures to ensure consistent, high-quality program delivery, facility operations, participant experiences, customer service, and safety.
- Oversee youth and adult athletics, recreational leagues, tennis, pickleball, disc golf, action and extreme sports, tournaments, open play opportunities, field and court use, and other assigned recreation activities.
- Evaluate and enhance program effectiveness through participation analysis, performance metrics, community feedback, market trends, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Expand participation and accessibility by developing programs, partnerships, outreach strategies, and service models that address community needs and reduce barriers to recreation.
- Collaborate with schools, municipalities, sports organizations, nonprofit agencies, private providers, community groups, and the BREC Athletic Council to strengthen parish-wide recreation opportunities and coordination efforts.
- Lead the development and implementation of new and emerging recreation opportunities based on resident interests, recreation trends, facility capacity, and community demand.
- Oversee the quality, utilization, and long-term planning of athletic and active recreation facilities in collaboration with internal departments and external stakeholders, including support for capital improvement initiatives.
- Establish and enforce standards for coaches, volunteers, officials, partners, and facility users, including training, safety requirements, risk management practices, conduct expectations, and participant protection measures.
- Coordinate with Communications and Technology teams to promote recreation opportunities, improve public awareness, enhance registration and information systems, and increase community engagement.
- Assist with budget development and administration, including revenue monitoring, cost recovery analysis, purchasing, contracts, sponsorships, grants, partnership agreements, and resource allocation.
- Monitor and evaluate partnerships, leagues, and third-party providers to ensure compliance with organizational standards, public access expectations, and community benefit objectives.
- Supervise, train, develop, and evaluate assigned staff while fostering accountability, collaboration, innovation, professional growth, and exceptional customer service.
- Represent the department at community meetings, advisory councils, professional organizations, partner engagements, public events, and other stakeholder forums.
- Prepare and present reports, analyses, recommendations, and updates for leadership, advisory groups, and other stakeholders.
