Overview
The Assistant Controller is a key finance leader who helps manage daily accounting activities and ensures financial information is accurate and reliable. This role supports strong internal processes and works closely with teams across the business to help projects stay on track financially. The Assistant Controller plays an important role in improving processes, supporting business decisions, and ensuring company policies and standards are followed.
Location & Travel Details: Preference for candidates living in the Denver, CO area. This is a hybrid role. Must be able to travel up to 10% of the time.
Responsibilities
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:- Assist Controller with various tasks and projects, including, but not limited to, corporate requests, internal and external audit requests, supporting schedules and reports to meet month end/year end work papers, monthly, quarterly, and annual deliverables and reports
- Oversee the implementation and ongoing application of accounting standards (ASC 606, ASC 842)
- Review accounting conclusions and ensure compliance with GAAP and SOX requirements
- Evaluate effectiveness of internal controls and segregation of duties
- Ability to work with project managers and others in the organization directly related to project performance, estimates and controls
- Review of month end, quarter end and year end work papers and variance analysis for completeness and accuracy
- Ensure timely and accurate issuance of reporting packages to corporate
- Validate key financial results and investigate variances with accounting and operations teams
- Assist with audits with internal and external auditors
- Ensure compliance with accounting policies and procedures, including Sarbanes Oxley
- Oversee fixed asset accounting, including review of acquisitions, disposals, and depreciation
- Ensure accuracy of prepaid, insurance, and balance sheet account reconciliations
- Drive process improvements in all accounting areas
- Ensure compliance with Authority Matrix requirements, including review of approvals and supporting documentation for key transactions
SUPERVISORY: - Responsible for the management and development of staff accountants
Qualifications
EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:- Bachelor's degree (B.A.) from four-year college or university
- CPA certification preferred
- Five (5) to seven (7) years' experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:- Be knowledgeable of MIC Health and Safety programs and project specific regulations.
- When on-site, actively participate in daily toolbox meetings with crews and subcontractors.
- Set a personal example of safe behavior and integrity.
- Proficiency in complex project accounting principles
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Products.
- Strong knowledge of InEight or Vista Software / Oracle ERP systems.
- Extensive knowledge in all aspects of construction accounting, including percentage of completion calculations
- Extensive knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP)
- Proficient communication, interpersonal and organization skills along with attention to detail and a high level of accuracy and professionalism
- Ability to handle multiple tasks with simultaneous deadlines and prioritize workload in a fast-paced dynamic environment
- A proven leader in mentoring and developing accounting staff
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Ability to interact with multiple personalities at all levels within the organization
