Position Overview

The Area Equipment Manager is responsible for managing and optimising equipment and fleet assets for the assigned geographic coverage, with a focus on safety, reliability, productivity, and cost-effectiveness. This role requires collaboration with internal and external stakeholders, as well as technical and financial skills, performance management expertise, and industry knowledge. You will work closely with CRH Division Leadership, Company Presidents, and their teams through hands-on management and visibility in the business.

Core Focus Areas

As Area Equipment Manager, you'll drive three critical business outcomes:

1. Sound Repair & Maintenance Decisions: Ensuring shops make prudent, cost-effective repair and maintenance decisions that balance equipment reliability with operational efficiency. You'll provide leadership and guidance to Equipment Managers, helping them navigate complex R&M scenarios and align decisions with overall business objectives.

2. Fleet Optimisation & Asset Utilisation: Continuously optimise fleet composition and asset utilisation across the geographic area. This includes identifying underutilised equipment, right-sizing fleets for operations, and implementing strategies that maximise equipment availability whilst minimising total cost of ownership.

3. P&L Ownership & Financial Performance: Monitor equipment and shop P&L at the Business Unit level, driving cost reduction and operational efficiency initiatives. You'll complete monthly financial reviews, communicate results, and execute action items to ensure financial sustainability.

Day-to-Day Responsibilities
• Lead Equipment Managers in repair and maintenance decision-making through coaching, guidance, and hands-on support
• Drive cost reduction and operational efficiency initiatives whilst maintaining high equipment availability and performance
• Maintain open communication with end users, stakeholders, and internal teams via phone, email, Teams, and in-person visits
• Visit stakeholder locations regularly to identify opportunities, solve problems, and provide on-the-ground support for evolving business scenarios
• Communicate progress, challenges, and recommendations to divisional leadership and operating company teams

Strategic Responsibilities
• Develop and execute a comprehensive five-year capital expenditure (CapEx) strategy, including equipment replacement planning and lifecycle extension through rebuild programmes
• Partner with Equipment Managers and external dealers to establish and strengthen long-term supplier relationships and service agreements that drive value
• Optimise asset lifecycle management to maximise category strategy and total cost of ownership across the geographic area
• Streamline procedures and standardise best practices across the geographical area to improve consistency and efficiency
• Champion the implementation of new software and processes, supporting frontline teams through training and change management
• Assist in driving an effective employee-driven safety culture
• Represent the geographical area on divisional and national equipment teams and support enterprise-wide initiatives

Success Metrics

You'll be measured on your ability to deliver:
• Effective management of total cost of ownership (TCO) and cost per hour reduction
• Reduction of outstanding preventative maintenance (PM) backlog
• Reduction of underutilised equipment and improved fleet utilisation rates
• Support for Operations in achieving critical business goals (time savings, margin improvement, problem resolution)
• Strong stakeholder engagement and satisfaction

Knowledge & Skills Required
• Proven ability to develop relationships and communicate effectively with all levels of the organisation
• Foundational mechanical knowledge
• Foundational knowledge of the industry (highway construction, hot mix asphalt, ready mix, and aggregate production)
• Strong negotiation skills and ability to work with suppliers
• Sound financial acumen, analytical, and problem-solving skills
• Ability to drive change and new concepts through persistence, self-motivation, follow-through, and commitment
• Highly driven to deliver results and a high level of engagement across the business
• Ability to lead by influence and drive change in a complex, multi-site environment

Education & Experience

Preferred qualifications include:
• Bachelor's degree, technical school degree, or related experience with a minimum of 5 years of equipment management experience
• Experience working with electronic equipment management systems
• Experience managing P&L responsibility
• Experience in mining, construction, or manufacturing

Travel Requirements
