Farmers believes in a culture of collaboration, creativity, and innovation, which thrives when we have the ability to work flexibly in a virtual setting as well as the opportunity to be together in person. Our hybrid work environment combines the best of both worlds with at least three (3) days in office and up to two (2) days virtual for employees who live within fifty (50) miles of a Farmers corporate office. Applicants beyond fifty (50) miles may still be considered.

Job Summary

Agile Dev Team Members have collective responsibility for the design, development, testing and/or deployment of system functionality. Provides guidance, mentorship and training to a direct reporting staff of Agile Dev team members. Agile Dev Team Member IV designs and delivers full-stack solutions for personal lines insurance business systems, leveraging modern technology including generative AI integration, cloud architectures, and enterprise applications. Ensures systems are architecturally sound, high in code quality, and meet both functional and non-functional requirements. Works with little to no guidance from more senior developers or architects to design solutions, evaluate technical tradeoffs, and communicate architecture decisions to stakeholders.

  • This role focuses on building systems that modernize personal lines insurance operations-from policy administration and customer interactions to claims processing, underwriting support, and document automation. You'll evaluate and integrate generative AI capabilities (LLMs, agents, RAG, prompt engineering) to solve real business problems, while maintaining a strong foundation in full-stack engineering fundamentals.

(Position title: Agile Dev Team Member IV)

What You'll Do

  • Demonstrates customer needs by interpreting business requirements into viable technical solutions. Breaks down features and epics into user stories with clear acceptance criteria. Conducts design reviews and impact assessments across people, processes, and technology.
  • Designs and develops full-stack applications using Python or Java backends with React/TypeScript frontends, applying TDD and BDD to build quality from the ground up.
  • Evaluates multiple approaches to solve business problems using generative AI-including prompt engineering, Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), autonomous agents, and LLM API orchestration. Assesses when AI adds value versus when traditional approaches are more appropriate. Determines the right implementation method for each use case.
  • Designs systems, APIs, and data models that balance scalability, performance, and maintainability. Reviews and validates technical designs of team members to ensure alignment with business needs and architectural principles.
  • Leverages cloud platforms (AWS, GCP) and containerization to deploy full-stack applications. Manages integration with existing enterprise systems.
  • Communicates technical context and design decisions to cross-functional stakeholders (Product Owners, Business Analysts, other engineers). Identifies and raises risks and trade-offs, offering multiple solution approaches.
  • Participates in key ceremonies (Daily Standups, Sprint Planning, PI Planning, Retrospectives, Backlog Refinement) to drive execution and transparency. Demonstrates working features to stakeholders. Mentors junior team members on engineering practices and emerging technologies.

Experience Requirements

  • Minimum 1 year as Agile Dev Team Member III or 7+ years in related software development roles required.
  • 3+ years of full-stack application development experience.

Education Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field preferred.
  • SAFe Practitioner or SAFe Agilist Certification preferred.

Additional Qualifications

  • Strong verbal communication and listening skills. Demonstrates advanced communication adapted for different audiences. Delivers meaningful feedback effectively. Coaches others on communication.
  • Excellent collaboration and team building skills. Actively motivates team effectiveness and serves as an example in team environments.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills. Breaks down complex issues to determine root cause and offers viable solutions. Evaluates trade-offs (cost, performance, maintainability, timeline) before recommending action.
  • High degree of initiative and self-direction. Persistent in seeking opportunities that stretch capabilities. Effectively coaches and delivers constructive feedback.
  • Working knowledge of generative AI implementation patterns: prompt engineering, Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), autonomous agents, and LLM orchestration. Hands-on experience integrating LLM APIs (AWS Bedrock, OpenAI or Anthropic) into production applications.
  • Solid understanding of REST/GraphQL APIs, microservices architecture, and cloud-native application design.
  • Demonstrated experience with at least one major cloud platform (AWS, GCP) including deploying and managing applications in production.
  • Hands-on experience with SQL and NoSQL databases; understanding of when to apply each.
  • Practical experience integrating third-party APIs and external services into applications.
  • Solid understanding of software engineering fundamentals: version control (Git), testing (unit, integration, API), CI/CD pipelines, code review practices.
  • Ability to understand business processes and translate requirements into technical solutions. Comfortable communicating with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Preferred: Experience in insurance or financial services; prior work developing systems for scale or performance-critical applications; exposure to mature engineering practices (observability, monitoring, documentation).
