Full Job Description
The Application Engineer I is a key technical resource supporting early-stage engineering for the Industrial Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) and Microgrid group within Generac. This individual will provide technical support on the BESS and microgrid product lines, advising the sales team, dealers, and customers on solutions that drive standardization, efficiency, and reliability, while meeting the project technical requirements. The Jr. Application Engineer will support communication between the sales team and engineering/product/execution teams and collaborate with various stakeholders throughout the sales cycle involving customers, specifying engineers, distribution partners, internal/external resources, and vendors.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering;
  • 0-1 years' experience working in an Engineering role;
  • Familiar with reviewing electrical diagrams and other technical documents with a solid understanding of basic electrical and mechanical control system concepts;
  • Excellent written and verbal technical communication skills
  • High level of attention to detail
  • Ability to travel up to 20%.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Electrical or Mechanical Engineering degree;
  • Customer Service or Sales Support experience;
  • Experience as a technical communicator or educator;
  • Experience reviewing and creating technical documentation such as electrical one-lines, customer and sales support documentation, sequence of operations, product documentation, etc.;
  • Power or energy modeling experience;
  • Project management experience.


Essential Duties:

50%: Support the BESS/Microgrid sales team prior to Purchase Order (PO) with early-stage technical requirements. This includes gathering field requirements from customers:
  • Listen, understand, and convey customer project requirements;
  • Review electrical one-line diagrams, sequence of operations, and other technical specifications for BESS and microgrid projects. Recommend required design and functional changes needed to align with the product line and drive standardization.
  • Flag and escalate non-standard design elements and feature requests for resolution with support from Application team.
  • Leverage Xendee energy management modeling tool to recommend BESS size on projects based on customer inputs.
  • Provide sales support by answering technical questions on calls, via email, etc.
  • Collaborate with customer, salesperson, and other stakeholders to facilitate creating, documenting, and proposing Generac solutions


30%: Support the Technical Project Manager in guiding contracted projects through the project process from PO to commissioning when the system becomes operational:
  • After receiving a Purchase Order, review project details and ensure project requirements align with the scope of the solution sold. Flag misalignment in scope.
  • Collaborate with customer, salesperson, project manager, factory, and other stakeholders to facilitate advancing the project process, identifying and resolving roadblocks preventing project progress.


20%: Support educating sales, dealers, and customers on products, arming them with the information required to incorporate them into their designs:
  • Attend and present at Lunch & Learns, webinars, and meetings with sales team.
  • Create technical documentation, including training material, ordering guides, application notes, etc.
  • Provide demos of microgrid control and monitoring software.


Other Duties as assigned and the following: less than 10%
  • Perform technical/product training for salespeople, estimators, and engineers;
  • Articulate technology and product positioning to both business and technical users;
  • Other duties as assigned.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Maintain high level of product knowledge for BESS and Microgrid equipment;
  • Ability to interpret customer specifications;
  • Ability to analyze and answer technical questions;
  • Ability to analyze electrical diagrams and control schematics;
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical symbols, characters, and modify;
  • Ability to apply product knowledge and technical skills to solve simple application problems with supervision;
  • Strong communication, Interpersonal and organizational skills;
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office.


Compensation: Generac is committed to fair and equitable compensation practices. The salary range for this role when based in Fort Collins, Colorado is $78,200.00 - $100,00.00 USD Annual . This compensation will ultimately be in line with the location in which the position is filled. Final compensation for this role will be determined by various factors such as a candidate's relevant work experience, skills, certifications, and geographic location. This role is eligible for variable compensation including short- and long-term incentives.
