Application and Explosion Protection Engineer

Your Mission

HOERBIGER Safety Solutions, IEP Technologies (IEP) is seeking an Application & Explosion Protection Engineer to join our team in Marlborough, MA. This position drives the development and application of advanced explosion protection solutions for industrial manufacturing environments.

This role combines engineering excellence, research, and industry engagement to advance the company's technical capabilities while supporting customers with innovative and scientifically validated safety solutions. The engineer will lead the development of explosion protection methodologies, perform advanced engineering analyses, contribute to industry standards, and represent the organization as a recognized technical expert.

How you will make a difference

  • Lead the development and validation of advanced explosion protection methodologies for combustible dust, gas, and hybrid mixture hazards.
  • Perform Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis and other engineering simulations to evaluate explosion behavior, venting effectiveness, suppression performance, and process safety risks.
  • Serve as a technical subject matter expert supporting customer applications, product development, and complex hazard assessments.
  • Participate in and contribute to industry governing bodies, technical committees, and standards organizations to help shape future explosion protection and process safety practices.
  • Develop technical white papers, journal articles, application notes, and web content that strengthen the company's thought leadership and market presence.
  • Represent the organization as a technical speaker at industry conferences, seminars, webinars, and customer training events worldwide.


What you should be good at

Technical Leadership
  • Lead engineering studies related to explosion venting, suppression, isolation, containment, and combustible dust hazard mitigation.
  • Develop analytical models and engineering methodologies to support product development and system performance validation.
  • Conduct CFD simulations and interpret results to optimize safety system designs and support customer-specific applications.
  • Provide technical guidance to engineering, sales, operations, and project management teams on complex applications.

Research & Innovation
  • Identify emerging technologies, regulatory trends, and industry best practices related to explosion protection and process safety.
  • Lead or support internal research initiatives focused on improving safety technologies and engineering methods.
  • Evaluate opportunities for intellectual property development, technical publications, and innovation projects.

Industry Engagement & Thought Leadership
  • Maintain active participation in relevant professional organizations and standards committees such as NFPA, ISO, ASTM, IEC, or similar industry bodies.
  • Publish technical papers and application-focused content to educate customers and industry stakeholders.
  • Present technical findings and company innovations at conferences, symposiums, customer workshops, and webinars

Customer & Project Support
  • Support complex customer projects through hazard analysis, system design review, and technical consultation.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure solutions meet performance, regulatory, and safety requirements.
  • Participate in customer visits, risk assessments, factory acceptance tests, and field evaluations as required.


Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Process Safety Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
  • Master of Science (M.Sc.) degree in an engineering discipline, or actively pursuing an M.Sc., strongly preferred.
  • 5+ years of engineering experience in explosion protection, process safety, fluid dynamics, industrial safety systems, or a related technical field.
  • Experience with CFD software and simulation-based engineering analysis.
  • Strong technical writing skills with demonstrated ability to develop white papers, technical publications, and engineering reports.
  • Excellent presentation and communication skills with the ability to effectively engage customers, industry groups, and technical audiences.
  • Experience with combustible dust hazards, explosion venting, suppression, isolation, or fire and explosion risk assessment.
  • Participation in professional societies or standards development organizations.
  • Published technical papers, articles, or conference presentations.
  • Knowledge of NFPA, ATEX, IECEx, OSHA, and related safety standards.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or progress toward licensure is a plus.

  • Competitive Pay: This is an exempt position with a starting pay range from $100,000 to $140,000 per year. Compensation will be based upon qualifications and experience.
  • Work Location: This role is based at the IEP Technologies facility in Marlborough, MA. The role will work onsite five days per week, with the opportunity to transition to Hybrid (3 days onsite / 2 days remote) based on performance after six months. Local candidates are encouraged to apply; relocation benefits are not offered for this role.
