Position Summary

This is a highly responsible technical position requiring experience with the use of sophisticated analytical equipment and use of protocols for preparation of samples for analytical analyses of metals and radionuclides. This individual will be responsible for coordinating all fee for service analytical analyses conducted for metals and radionuclides at SREL, planning and scheduling sample processing, conducting analytical analyses, delivery of data to customers, and final billing. This individual also will be responsible for maintaining analytical equipment in working order and maintaining proper calibration and QA/QC to ensure data accuracy and precision.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies

Experience preparing samples for analytical analyses such as ICP-MS and total mercury analysis, conducting analytical analysis on ISP-MC and total mercury analyzer platforms, training others in sample preparation for analytical analysis, chemical inventory, chemical waste management, and chemical safety, and managing fee for service analytical services program. Must possess critical thinking and process improvement skills, find and apply knowledge. Must possess a logic-based approach to challenges, an adaptive management approach to obstacles, and use university resources responsibly.

Duties/Responsibilities

Financial Responsibilities: Coordinate fee for service analytical analyses performed by SREL. Manage budgets for Analytical Services Account which received $300-$400 thousand in fee dollars annually. Negotiate sample processing and handling requirements, schedule sample processing and data delivery, and process and submit internal fee for service billing. Track expenditures and invoicing related to the Analytical Services Program at SREL.

Duties/Responsibilities

Project Management: This position serves as the primary point of contact for SREL employees who use the Analytical Services Program for research activities.
Consult with users to develop project specific protocols that determine needed supplies and costs for sample processing that are necessary to perform sample preparation and analysis, equipment time needed, hazardous waste disposal plans, and permits. Coordinate all maintenance and repairs for SREL fee-for-service analytical equipment as required. Consult with SREL faculty and staff regarding problem-solving associated with minor equipment issues and protocol optimization as needed.

Supervision and Training: Evaluate training needs for laboratory personnel using Analytical Services facilities and equipment and schedule/provide training on policies, procedures, and SOPs as required for use of SREL Analytical Services facilities and equipment. 20 to 30 staff and students are trained and certified for research activities by this position annually. Directly supervise, train, and conduct annual performance reviews for Analytical Services laboratory technician(s).

Conduct regular safety inspections of SREL Analytical Services Labs for evidence of compliance with chemical, hygiene, and other relevant regulatory authorities. Maintain SREL Chemical Inventory for SREL Analytical Services Laboratories.
