Full Job Description
Job Summary:

The Alternate Director of Nursing (ADON) will assist the Director of Nursing in overseeing the nursing staff, ensuring the provision of optimal patient care, and maintaining regulatory compliance. This role will be responsible for supervising the clinical nursing team, providing guidance and leadership, and supporting the daily operations of the nursing department. In the absence of the Director of Nursing, the ADON will assume full responsibility for the department's functions. Additionally, when not assigned other administrative tasks, the ADON will provide direct patient care.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Assist the Director of Nursing in managing the day-to-day operations of the nursing department, ensuring that the highest standards of care are maintained
  • Supervise, lead, and mentor nursing staff, ensuring appropriate staffing levels and competencies for patient care needs.
  • Ensure nursing staff adherence to established care plans, policies, and procedures.
  • Monitor patient care, including documentation, assessments, and nursing interventions, to ensure quality and safety.
  • Support the development, implementation, and evaluation of patient care programs and services.
  • Assist in the preparation for inspections, audits, and surveys by regulatory bodies, including but not limited to, state health departments and accreditation agencies.
  • Evaluate patient care outcomes and implement improvement plans as needed to enhance patient satisfaction and quality of care.
  • Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations, as well as organizational policies related to patient care and nursing operations.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to coordinate care and meet patient needs effectively
  • Review and approve nursing documentation and other clinical records for accuracy and completeness.
  • Participate in the recruitment, hiring, training, and performance evaluation of nursing staff.
  • Provide support to staff in the management of challenging or complex patient situations and assist with clinical decision-making.
  • In the absence of the Director of Nursing, assume full responsibility for department leadership, including but not limited to staffing decisions, policy implementation, and oversight of patient care.
  • Maintain open and effective communication with patients, families, healthcare providers, and staff.
  • Stay current with developments in nursing practices, regulations, and industry standards, and apply knowledge to improve patient care services.
  • Provide direct patient care when not assigned to other leadership or administrative tasks, including patient assessments, administering medications, wound care, and other nursing interventions as necessary.

Required Skills/Abilities:
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Customer service experience with a compassionate and professional demeanor.
  • Proficient in office software (Microsoft Office Suite, email, etc.) and familiarity with office equipment (fax, phone systems, etc.).
  • Ability to adapt to a fast-paced environment and manage competing priorities.
  • Experience with electronic health records (EHR) systems, Kinnser is preferred.

Supervision Responsibilities:
  • Oversee the nursing staff and assume full responsibility of department functions in the absence of the Director of Nursing

Physical Requirements
  • Prolonged standing, walking and sitting required; requires working under some stressful conditions to meet deadlines and patient/family needs; and to make quick decisions and resource acquisition; meet patient/family psychosocial needs.
