Job Description: Advanced Practice Provider (APP) - Breast Surgery

Position Title: Advanced Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant)
Department: Breast Surgery
Reports To: Surgical Breast Oncology Surgeon / Surgical Services Leadership
Location: Arlington campus, Greenville NC
Employment Type: Full-Time

Position Summary

The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) will work collaboratively with a breast surgeon to provide comprehensive, patient-centered care throughout the continuum of breast health. This includes pre-operative evaluation, peri-operative management, post-operative follow-up, and clinical support in both outpatient and operative settings. The APP will play a key role in patient education, care coordination, intraoperative and clinical efficiency within the breast surgery practice.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Care
  • Conduct thorough patient histories, physical examinations, and assessments for patients with benign and malignant breast conditions.
  • Order, interpret, and review diagnostic studies including labs, imaging, and pathology reports.
  • Develop and implement evidence-based treatment plans in collaboration with the supervising breast surgeon.
  • Provide pre-operative counseling, surgical consent discussions, and education regarding procedures, expectations, and recovery.
  • Perform post-operative evaluations including wound checks, drain management, pain control, and complication surveillance.
  • Manage urgent patient concerns (e.g., infection, seroma, pain issues) in clinic or via telehealth as appropriate.
  • Assist with in-office procedures such as biopsies, seroma aspirations, excisions, and dressing changes.

Surgical Support
  • Provide first-assist support in the operating room for breast surgeries, including lumpectomies, mastectomies, sentinel lymph node biopsies, and reconstructive-related procedures as appropriate.
  • Support intraoperative tasks such as retraction, suturing, patient positioning, and documentation.


Care Coordination & Patient Navigation
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including radiology, oncology, plastic surgery, radiation oncology, pathology, and genetics.
  • Support referral management, survivorship planning, and coordination of imaging and diagnostic workflows.
  • Participate in tumor boards, case reviews, and multidisciplinary planning meetings.

Education, Communication & Support
  • Provide empathetic, clear education to patients and families regarding diagnosis, treatment options, and follow-up care.
  • Assist with genetic testing coordination and risk-reduction counseling when appropriate.
  • Document all encounters thoroughly in the electronic health record (EHR) in compliance with organizational standards.

Quality & Professional Development
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives within the breast surgery service line.
  • Remain current with clinical best practices through continuing education, conferences, and professional development.
  • Support practice growth by improving clinic workflow, patient throughput, and patient satisfaction.

Qualifications

Required
  • Master's degree from an accredited NP or PA program.
  • Current NP or PA license in NC.
  • Minimum 2+ years of surgical experience, preferably in general surgery, oncology, plastic surgery or breast surgery.


  • BLS/ACLS certification.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with a patient-centered approach.

Preferred
  • Experience in breast surgery or plastic surgery.
  • Familiarity with breast imaging workflows and cancer care pathways.

Working Conditions
  • Outpatient clinic setting and operating days.
  • Requires standing, walking, and light lifting at times.
  • Exposure to operating room and procedural environment.
