Position Overview
We're looking for a detail-oriented, hands-on Accounting Manager to join our team. Reporting directly to the CFO, the Accounting Manager will lead a four person accounting team and play a central role in maintaining financial accuracy, overseeing key accounting processes for both growers and the company, and supporting the company's ongoing operational excellence.
This is a hands-on role for someone who enjoys both leading people and digging into the details. The ideal candidate thrives on working directly in the accounting systems, managing grower accounting alongside company financials, and ensuring precision and integrity in every transaction. As the company continues to grow, this role offers the opportunity to take on greater scope and responsibility, with a potential path to a Controller position.
Key Responsibilities
- Hands-On Accounting Leadership: Lead and actively participate in daily accounting operations, with ownership of the accuracy and timeliness of month-end and year-end close. Maintain a strong understanding of the company's financials, investigate discrepancies and unusual trends, and ensure issues are resolved thoroughly and accurately.
- Grower Accounting: Oversee all aspects of grower accounting, including settlements and reporting. Work closely with grower relations, operations, and sales teams to ensure accuracy, transparency, and trust in grower financials.
- Team Leadership: Lead and develop a team of three accounting staff, providing technical expertise, coaching, and support while working collaboratively on daily tasks and problem-solving.
- Financial Analysis & Reporting: Prepare and review financial statements, budgets, and variance analyses, with an eye toward understanding the story behind the numbers. Partner with the CFO on cash flow forecasting, budgeting, financial reporting, and analysis that supports business decisions.
- Systems & Reporting: Maintain accurate financial data and effective accounting workflows within Famous ERP. Develop tools and reports that improve financial visibility and support data-driven decision-making.
- Internal Controls & Compliance: Strengthen and maintain effective internal controls and ensure compliance with GAAP and applicable financial and regulatory requirements.
- Process & Systems Improvement: Proactively identify opportunities to strengthen accounting processes, systems, controls, and workflows. Explore and implement automation, new tools, and better ways of working that increase efficiency, accuracy, and scalability. Help build the accounting infrastructure and capabilities the company will need as it grows.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; Accounting preferred.
- 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, including hands-on general ledger work and experience leading or supervising others.
- Strong technical accounting knowledge, including accrual accounting and GAAP principles.
- Prior experience in agriculture, produce, food distribution, or another inventory-based business preferred; grower accounting experience is a plus.
- Experience with Famous ERP or another ERP/accounting system; Famous or agriculture-focused systems experience is a plus.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including pivot tables, lookups, and data analysis.
What We're Looking For
We're looking for someone who brings strong accounting fundamentals along with the curiosity and initiative to help us continue building a stronger accounting function. The right person will:
- Be curious. You want to understand not just how something is done, but why. When something doesn't look right or a process could work better, you dig in, ask questions, and figure it out.
- Take initiative. You don't wait to be handed every project. You identify gaps and opportunities, explore potential solutions, and take ownership of moving good ideas forward.
- Look for better ways to work. You're interested in how automation, technology, and new tools can make accounting processes more accurate, efficient, and scalable.
- Understand the business behind the numbers. You're interested in how sales, operations, grower activity, and other parts of the business flow through the financials-and you notice when the numbers tell you something worth investigating.
- Be both a leader and a doer. You enjoy developing and supporting a team, but you're equally comfortable getting into the accounting system and doing the work yourself.
- Bring ownership and sound judgment. You're comfortable making decisions within your area of responsibility, following issues through to resolution, and knowing when to bring in the CFO or others.
- Want to grow. You're excited to take on greater responsibility as the company grows and to develop the skills and experience that could prepare you for a future Controller role.
