DEADLINE TO APPLYThis recruitment will close at 5:00 PM (PST) on Thursday, July 23, 2026.THE OPPORTUNITYThe City is seeking a detail-oriented and analytical Accountant II to perform journey-level professional accounting work in support of the City's financial operations. This position is responsible for maintaining and analyzing accounting records, reconciling general ledger accounts, managing fixed assets, preparing financial reports and journal entries, and participating in month-end, year-end, and audit processes. The Accountant II exercises independent judgment in applying governmental accounting principles, policies, and procedures to ensure the accuracy, integrity, and compliance of the City's financial records. Responsibilities also include researching and resolving complex accounting issues, preparing account reconciliations and budget schedules, monitoring special funds and grant expenditures, reviewing financial transactions for accuracy and proper authorization, and providing technical accounting support to City departments. The ideal candidate is a collaborative problem solver with strong analytical and organizational skills who is committed to delivering accurate financial information, identifying opportunities to improve accounting processes, and providing exceptional customer service to both internal and external stakeholders.

IDEAL CANDIDATEOur ideal candidate has a strong understanding of governmental accounting principles, financial reporting, and internal controls, with the ability to independently analyze complex financial data, resolve accounting issues, and recommend process improvements. This role also provides technical accounting support to City departments and ensures compliance with applicable accounting standards, policies, and regulations. Successful candidates will possess excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills, proficiency with financial systems and spreadsheet software, and the ability to build effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders. A bachelor's degree in accounting or a closely related field (or equivalent related experience) and at least two years of professional accounting experience are required.
MINIMUM AND DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONSA bachelor's degree in accounting or a closely related field; OR equivalent related work experience;
AND at least two (2) years of professional accounting experience.
Previous CIty or Government experience in accounting is highly desirable.
Licenses; Certificates; Special Requirements:A valid California driver's license and the ability to maintain insurability under the City's vehicle insurance policy.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICSAccountant II is the journey-level class and is expected to perform more difficult professional accounting work requiring knowledge of governmental accounting systems and procedures, and the ability to exercise independent judgment within established systems and procedures.
Accountant II is distinguished from Accounting Technician in that incumbents in the former class are required to understand and apply professional accounting theories, principles, terms and practices in the preparation and evaluation of financial records, transactions and reports.
Accountant II is further distinguished from Senior Accountant in that an incumbent in the latter class performs more complex accounting transactions and analysis and works on accounting issues of greater significance and impact on the operations and management of the City.y.
