What role you will play in our team

The role primarily focuses on assessing the construction and performance of mine structures while ensuring the safety of mining operations. The Geotechnical Field Engineer is responsible for understanding geotechnical requirements and constraints related to the construction of both in-pit and out-of-pit structures, as well as associated monitoring requirements.

This is a dynamic and fast-paced role that involves close collaboration with both Operations and Mine Technical teams, including site-based and Calgary-based personnel.

This position is based at the Kearl Mine Site and follows a 14-days-on / 14-days-off fly-in, fly-out schedule (consisting of 12-hour workdays).

What you will do

Key Responsibilities:

  • Review designs and specifications to provide technical guidance and ensure that mine structures are constructed in accordance with design requirements.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for field geotechnical concerns, ensuring issues are promptly investigated and appropriate recommendations are provided to maximize operational flexibility.
  • Conduct inspections and sign-offs to ensure the quality of critical construction activities meets required standards.
  • Provide technical guidance and support to shovel planners regarding pit wall stability, ensuring pit walls are constructed in accordance with design.
  • Prepare Specification Deviation Reports and Technical Decision Reports as required.
  • Perform instrumentation and construction reviews of mine structures at defined intervals.
  • Manage and maintain the geotechnical instrumentation inventory.
  • Coordinate troubleshooting and access-related activities to ensure timely collection of instrumentation data.
  • Provide input into annual drilling programs to fulfill future instrumentation requirements for mine structures.
  • Support the preparation of regulatory documents and presentations for geotechnical review boards.
  • Assist with AER field tours and facilitate Engineer of Record (EOR) / Designer of Record (DOR) site visits.
  • Conduct geotechnical analyses to verify that field data complies with design requirements and to support design optimization for improved operational flexibility.
  • Oversee geotechnical engineering contractors to ensure timely completion of QA/QC activities, instrumentation readings, and maintenance work.
  • Review and compile field and laboratory test data for structure assessments.
  • Review daily and weekly construction reports to ensure accurate and complete documentation.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Geotechnical, Civil or Geological Engineering
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation or eligibility with APEGA is required
  • 5+ years of experience in geotechnical engineering, planning, design, or operations
  • Field experience in Oil Sands operations managing mine structures is an asset
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, communication, and coordination skills
  • Highly motivated individual with ability to work collaboratively in multi-disciplinary teams
