Full Job Description
The Vice Principal of a school shall, subject to the Minister's directives and the policies of the education authority,
  • Work with and support all duties and responsibilities of the school principal
  • Act as the designate to the principal in the principal's absence
  • Perform specific duties in the school as assigned by the principal
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Be responsible for the school to which the principal is assigned by the education authority;
  • Provide educational leadership in the school;
  • Ensure that the instruction provided by teachers employed at the school is consistent with the courses of study and education programs prescribed, approved or authorized pursuant to this Act;
  • Perform the supervisory, management and other duties required or assigned by the Director or the education authority;
  • Evaluate or make provision for the evaluation of teachers under the principal's supervision and report to the Director respecting the evaluation;
  • Attend to the domains within the CAMET Leadership Standards;
  • Perform teaching duties as assigned by the Principal/ Public Schools Branch;
  • Maintain proper order and discipline in the school and on the school premises and during school-sponsored activities;
  • Foster cooperation and coordination of effort among staff members of the school;
  • Ensure records are maintained in respect of each student enrolled in the school in accordance with the regulations and policies;
  • Ensure that teachers conduct appropriate assessments to determine the progress and promotion of students, as required by the Minister or the Public Schools Branch;
  • Promote the students that the principal considers deserve promotion and issue to students the statements, report cards or certificates that are appropriate;
  • Report to the Director and/or Administrator Support Leader as required on matters concerning the school;
  • Attend to the health, comfort and safety of the students;
  • Encourage the establishment of and consult the school council or home and school association on matters relevant to its functions;
  • Initiate the development of a school goals plan;
  • Assumes the duties and responsibilities of the principal in their absence;
  • Work with school staff to implement and achieve the goals set out in the school plan.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor of Education degree and holds or is eligible to hold a PEI Teaching Certificate 5;
  • Has completed Administrative Leadership Program with certification recognized by the PEI Registrar's office; or an appointment can be made conditional upon the successful applicant obtaining the qualification at the next offering of the course;
  • Minimum of five (5) years teaching experience;
  • Superior skills in educational leadership, effective teaching and curriculum implementation;
  • Excellent interpersonal, team building and communication skills, and exercises professional behavior;
  • Demonstrated ability to relate effectively with students, staff and the school community.
The following would be considered assets:
  • Holds or is eligible to hold a PEI Teaching Certificate 6;
  • Master's degree with a concentration in Educational Leadership/Administration;
  • Experience working at a dual-track school;
  • Bilingual;
  • Experience with ISC scheduling software;
  • Contract Administrative experience as a Principal or Vice-Principal;
  • Experience with Special Education programming (example: ILI/ BSP, IEP, ALPs, Adaptations, Academic Case Management, etc.);
  • Experience in administration in a large complex environment;
  • Bachelor of Education with a concentration in Secondary;
  • Experience and competency with administrative software and systems (example: PowerSchool, Excel, myBlueprint, etc.);
  • Three (3) or more years recent teaching experience at the Intermediate level;
  • Experience working with EAL students and families.
