JOB SUMMARY

The Director of Institutional Development (The Director) helps to define and launch the development strategy to drive START’s mission through programmatic operations and expansion.

In close coordination with the Chief Development Officer, The Director will identify short and long-term goals and strategies to ensure to proper research, identification, cultivation, solicitation, engagement, and stewardship of corporate, foundation, and individual giving.

The Director will create the internal processes, practices, and monitoring systems to effectively manage the development function and its outcomes and will be tasked with general administrative and operational duties.

Candidates should be self-starters, have a genuine appreciation for START’s mission, and embrace the “start-up” mentality of the development team.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Development Strategy

Strategize with the Chief Development Officer to define, launch and monitor the organizational development strategy.
Research potential corporate and foundation supporters and partners for all areas of START’s mission and programs.
Partner with START leadership and program staff to identify needs and goals.
Develop and maintain expert knowledge and understanding of START’s services and programs

Fund Development & Management

Identify funding opportunities through internal and external networking, including being abreast of federal, state and local funding programs and resources.
Proactively pursue grant opportunities by maintaining an active calendar of grant application due dates; collaborate with stakeholders to obtain required documentation to support grant applications and timely submission.
Develop grant proposals, write and edit general development materials and related communication.
Create monitoring system to identify and track grant proposal timelines, fund utilization, and required reporting.
Collaborate with finance to ensure responsible and purposeful utilization and tracking of philanthropic dollars.

Relationship Management & Communication

Cultivate and maintain relationships with key representatives of foundations and corporations
Partner with the communications office to create and launch campaigns to build awareness, engage, and solicit donors.
Respond to inquiries directed to the Office of Development.

Project Planning & Events

Plan, execute, and manage events sponsored by the Chief Development Officer or START’s leadership.
Collaborate with internal stakeholders to plan and execute other organizational events, as needed.
Maintain Development Events Calendar.

Other

General administrative and other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND COMPETENCIES

Bachelor’s degree in non-profit management, public policy, business administration, marketing, or a related field.
A minimum of 5 years of experience in fund development.
Excellent writing skills, particularly in grant writing.
Ability to track and maintain organized records and demonstrated project management skills.
Strong relationship manager with the ability to influence.
Experience and comfort level reaching out to new and external contacts and prospects.
Familiarity with research and fundraising software.
Expert communication skills.
General knowledge of the New York philanthropic community.
Ability to prioritize and handle multiple projects on an ongoing basis.
Ability to work well independently within a team environment.
Working knowledge of MS Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
Commitment to START’s mission.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Based on team expansion, supervisory responsibilities may be a requirement of this role.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Standard office setting.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

Significant local travel (>25%) is required to fulfill the responsibilities of this role.
