Manages all aspects of and maintains responsibility for all grounds and landscape concerns at the University of Rochester, including River Campus, Strong Memorial Hospital, School of Medicine and Dentistry, Mt. Hope properties, Mees Observatory, Memorial Art Gallery, South Campus, athletic fields and other satellite properties.
Manages landscape maintenance, snow removal and ice management, tree management, and management of the University’s dedicated trees, benches, gardens, etc. Responsible for management of the University’s arboretum.
Directs and inspires department supervisor providing all aspects of grounds maintenance and coordinates services with customers and service providers. Develops and implements training programs to include safety training, general landscaping education and sustainable landscape programs and initiatives. Responsible for policy and procedure protocols and emergency response for all weather conditions and natural disasters, such as snow, ice, wind, rain, tornadoes, hurricanes, earthquakes, and other events that might alter normal operating conditions on campus. Develops procedures and processes to continually improve service and quality. Performs 24/7 call in duties.
Makes recommendations on the hiring/termination of departmental staff and evaluates performance. Oversees and exercises control over numerous University budgets pertaining to grounds.
Arranges for contractual services. Develops specifications, plans and cost estimates. Serves as technical manager on matters related to inspection, material selection, estimating labor analysis, work programming, contractor recommendations, etc.
Promotes public relations with the University community and serves as Project Manager on internal and external University projects.
Serves as the University’s coordinator and technical advisor on all issues concerning landscape design, installation and maintenance as well as land use issues at the University. Interfaces with the planning office on issues relating to land use, new construction, site work and landscape issues. Assists the Campus Planning and Project Management division with management and coordination of landscape projects. Reviews construction plans and specifications for all University projects as to landscape design, public safety issues, traffic and pedestrian patterns as well as maintenance concerns to insure planning, aesthetic and operational criteria.
Consults with Deans, Directors, Department Heads and public officials and outside governing agencies in matters relating to grounds and landscape management, land use issues and construction projects. Participates in activities of community or professional organizations and represents the University with such groups as the City of Rochester, County of Monroe and consulting engineers and architect on landscape and horticultural issues.
Serves on various committees, provides liaison and consultation on issues relating to: landscape design and installations, public safety issues, traffic and pedestrian patterns, site development and other related issues.
Bachelor’s degree in Horticulture or related field and 5 years of professional experience in landscape maintenance, snow and ice management and horticulture and grounds staff supervision or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Strong management background with heavy emphasis on communication, organization and motivational skills. The ability to speak/read the English language fluently.
Clean/Valid NYS Motor Vehicle operator’s License. New York State DEC Pesticide Application License 3A preferred. Certified Grounds Manager (CGM) certification preferred. Certified Nursing Landscaping Professional (CNLP) certification preferred.
