Position SummaryThe Vice President of Quality and Safety will lead system-wide efforts to improve clinical quality, patient safety, patient experience, and regulatory compliance across Maine Behavioral Healthcare. Working closely with the Maine Behavioral Healthcare executive management team, the VP of Quality and Safety will coordinate and lead system-wide efforts to: ensure that the quality of clinical care meets evidence-based guidelines and best practices, improve systems of care delivery to eliminate preventable harm, measure and improve patient experience, ensure compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards, supportinternal and external performance measurement and reporting, appropriately handle patient complaints and grievances, and foster a culture of continuous performance improvement across the organization.

In this highly visible role, the VP of Quality and Safety will support strategic planning and goal setting related to clinical quality, patient safety, patient experience, and regulatory compliance. The incumbent will be responsible for mentoring and supervising a diverse team of quality and safety professionals focused on improving clinical care and achieving system-wide goals and objectives. Other responsibilities will include chairing relevant organizational committees and workgroups, and serving as a content expert and resource for managers and staff across Maine Behavioral Healthcare.

Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Master’s degree in a health-related field required; RN or MD preferred
  • 10+ years working in a health care delivery organization required, with a minimum of 5 years in a primarily administrative or management role
  • 5+ years of psychiatry-related clinical experiencepreferred
  • Experience working in the areas of Performance Improvement, Patient Safety, Regulatory Compliance, and Quality Management preferred
  • Familiarity with hospital settings preferred
  • Team facilitation experiencepreferred
  • Experience working in a complex, highly matrixed organization preferred
  • A proven track record motivating others to improve clinical quality and patient safety
  • Experience leading, managing, and working with teams across multiple locations preferred

Essential Functions

  • Lead system-wide efforts to improve clinical quality, patient safety, patient experience, and regulatory compliance across Maine Behavioral Healthcare
  • Coordinate and lead efforts to ensure that the quality of clinical care meets evidence-based professional guidelines and best practices
  • Coordinate and lead efforts to improve systems of care delivery with the goal of minimizing errors and eliminating preventable harm
  • Coordinate and lead efforts to measure and improve patient experience across the continuum of care
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory standards for delivering clinical care and maintenance of accreditation with requisite agencies
  • Implement and maintain efficient processes for internal and external performance reporting related to clinical quality, patient safety, and patient experience
  • Implement and maintain efficient processes for handling patient complaints and grievances; collaborate with organizational leadership in addressing complaints and grievances as indicated
  • Foster a culture of continuous performance improvement across the organization
  • Support strategic planning and goal setting related to clinical quality, patient safety, patient experience, and regulatory compliance
  • Mentor and supervise a diverse team of quality and safety professionals focused on improving clinical care and achieving system-wide goals and objectives; implement appropriate department structure to ensure staff engagement and productivity
  • Chair or co-chair key organizational committees and workgroups focused on improving quality and safety; serve on relevant Board and MaineHealth committees
  • Support the executive leadership team in achieving system-wide goals and objectives
  • Coordinate activities with MaineHealth quality and safety leadership and with relevant centralized teams and services
  • Serve as a resource re: performance improvement models and approaches-including education, consultation, and team facilitation
  • Serve as a resource for organizational leadership re: department of health on-site investigations and licensing, regulatory and accreditation surveys; collaborate as needed in the development and implementation of plans of correction in response to licensing, regulatory and accreditation findings
