What is Group Insurance?

Group Insurance is an operating unit within the U.S. Businesses Division of Prudential that primarily focuses on creating, distributing, and administering a complex range of life and disability insurance products for many top Fortune 500 companies. What will you do and what impact will you have?

The Vice President, Group Insurance Underwriting is responsible for leading the Knowledge Management, Learning & Development, Technical Excellence, Shared Services, and Quality Review teams. This position also leads several strategic projects and oversees department expenses. The Vice President, Group Insurance Underwriting must maintain awareness of industry trends and the competitive marketplace and be able to proactively identify potential pricing opportunities designed to drive towards sustainable profitable growth. This position plays a critical risk management role through prudent investigation of product opportunities and development of sound recommendations to senior management.

Responsibilities:

  • Nurture an environment of high performance and accountability by establishing challenging service, quality & productivity metrics while maintaining a balance with effective risk management
  • Empower employees to challenge the status quo; driving continuous improvement and high levels of efficiency throughout the organization
  • Build capable leadership at all levels of the organization through coaching, training & development
  • Build and maintain effective relationships and feedback mechanisms with sales, operations and other business units that successfully balance earnings and sales objectives
  • Oversees a staff of approximately 35 people in different locations

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 10 years group underwritingexperience; 5+ years of management experience culminating in a senior leadership role within a large group insurance business
  • Experience with leading teams of people in multiple locations
  • Must have deep underwriting knowledge of group life & disability in both middle and large market segments
  • Excellent leadership skills necessary to drive change and innovation while maintaining staff motivation and engagement
  • Disciplined execution and delivery skills with the experience driving accountability and ownership into every level of the organization
  • Experience acting as a key decision maker and member of a senior business leadership team
  • Keen understanding of the insurance industry’s best practices and the industry’s growth patterns and trends
  • Ability to attract, recruit, retain and develop high performing talent
  • Results/accountability orientation; strong client focus; superior oral and written executive communication skills
  • Bachelor’s degree, ideally with a financial focus such as business management, economics, or finance, strongly preferred
