We have an exceptional opportunity for a VP, Deputy General Counsel to lead the Legal Department for Ascensus, focusing on supporting its business units. This includes: managing and leading a team of legal professionals; providing advice and counsel to senior management; acting as subject matter expert in relevant areas of law; contract negotiation and drafting; and other day-to-day legal matters.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage and lead a team of attorneys and paralegals
  • Provide advice and counsel to senior management and other business leaders on legal, regulatory, legislative, compliance and business issues
  • Provide expertise in laws related to mutual funds, municipal securities and other investments, and regulated entities such as broker-dealers, investment advisors and transfer agents
  • Draft, negotiate and interpret contracts with clients, vendors and other third parties
  • Collaborate with Ascensus' Risk Management and Compliance departments
  • Manage and resolve disputes and litigation
  • Handle other day-to-day legal issues arising in a growing and complex business including employment, intellectual property and corporate governance

Requirements:

  • Ability manage and lead a team of professionals supporting multiple business units
  • Communicate effectively, verbally and in writing, with senior management, clients, regulators, government officials and others
  • Understand Ascensus' businesses and give practical advice to business leaders
  • Multitask and prioritize while always producing high-quality work
  • Think critically and creatively
  • Analyze and solve complex problems
  • Be proactive and entrepreneurial
  • Effectively work independently and as part of a team
  • J.D. from an accredited U.S. law school
  • Membership in good standing with a state bar association (Massachusetts is preferred)
  • Minimum 15 years as a practicing attorney
  • Minimum three years as a corporate associate in a law firm
  • Minimum three years managing a team of legal professionals
  • Experience with mutual funds, municipal securities and other investments, and regulated entities such as broker-dealers, investment advisors and transfer agents
  • Experience in the 529 plan and retirement plan industries is optimal
