The Vice President of Business Development (“VP of BD”) will lead the Business Development Team, reporting directly to the Chief Financial Officer.  He/she will be accountable for leading the business development strategy that supports the execution of the Halozyme Corporate strategy for growth and value creation.  He/she should continuously scan for and develop (in conjunction with relevant functional leaders and teams) new ideas and approaches that can increase Halozyme success, competitiveness and efficiency.  He/she will lead the business develop efforts to support the Enhanze growth strategy, focusing on accelerating the deal timelines and the number of new ENHANZE partnerships. He/she will work with members of the Executive Team to define the oncology business development strategy including specific target areas for clinical collaboration, M&A and/or licensing, including asset search/evaluation, assessment of opportunities, and execution of all corresponding deals.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

These may include but are not limited to:

  • Partner with CFO to assess the LRP and the impact of recommended/identified Halozyme strategic business development opportunities and options
  • Establish and lead portfolio assessment to determine pipeline gaps and generate ideas to fill such gaps
  • Lead process, while partnering with the Executive Team, to develop the oncology business development strategy to compliment the PEGPH20 strategy and Halozyme science expertise
  • Define specific target areas as it relates to acquisitions and/or in-licensing opportunities 
  • Lead outreach efforts to assess and prioritize potential candidates
  • Lead the business development ENHANZE partnering strategy including best and minimum terms, single versus multi-target deal approach, selection of ideal targets, proactive outreach plan and other aspects as deemed needed to maximize number of, value of, time to value creation of new ENHANZE deals
  • Partner with Alliance Management on ongoing assessments to identify opportunities/potential incentives to try to accelerate time to new target selection and development of partner programs
  • In collaboration with Executive Leadership, lead the assessment of the following: 
    • range of potential Halozyme future growth strategies,
    • risks and opportunities associated with these growth strategies
    • required capabilities and costs to execute
  • Propose strategic options for Management and Board of Director review, discussion and approval

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Minimum of Bachelor’s degree in business, pharmaceutical drug development or related; Master’s and / or PhD preferred with at least 12 years of experience (an equivalent combination of experience and education may be considered)
  • Experience in an oncology focused company and/or business unit
  • Experienced leader, especially in a matrix environment, inspiring trust and confidence
  • Strong collaboration skills and ability to work well on a cross functional team
  • Proven biopharmaceutical industry experience with a history of developing and leading business development strategy and initiatives
  • Solid professional relationships within the Biotech/Pharma community
  • Highly developed understanding of the external marketplace and scientific literature to identify short and long-term business development opportunities that are in alignment with Halozyme’s strategies
  • Ability to develop strong, positive relationships with senior management and Board of Directors
  • Experience in presenting to a wide variety of audiences, including internal teams, Board of Directors, and medical/scientific communities
  • Ability to initiate ways to improve performance and outcomes by developing novel approaches
  • Ability to think creatively with a big-picture view, be an idea generator, and to capitalize on business opportunities by developing well-thought-out strategies and initiatives
  • Energetic self-starter who is entrepreneurial and resourceful
  • Strategic and analytic approach to problem solving, with a real appreciation for the risk/benefit equation of the biotechnology enterprise

  • Strong communication, negotiation, and influencing skills to build both internal and external relationships, including the ability to assist in building, maintaining and managing external partnerships
