The Role:

Rakuten Kobo Inc. is looking for an UX Lead to join our UX, Web team! This role is responsible for the user experience of the Kobo website, manage a small team of information architects and visual designers. They will gather requirements and feedback from stakeholders and draw on customer research to improve and expand the web user experience and maintain a level of consistency across Kobo products.

The Person:

  • Conceive, design, and prototype userexperiences
    • Apply domain knowledge and best practices
    • Assess data from multiple sources and synthesize it to develop user flows and design compelling user experiences
    • Present UX solutions to a wide range of stakeholders, take feedback, and iterate on designs
  • Work closely with development and QA teams
    • Communicate designs to product owners, developers, QA, and other teams within Kobo
    • Work with dev and QA teams to solve issues encountered during development
    • Perform regular UX reviews as projects near completion
  • Work closely withUsability team to help plancustomer research and ensure that research findings are integrated into design
    • Champion user-centered design (UCD) at Kobo
    • Help drive, plan, and run usability testing for upcoming features and devices
    • Incorporate relevant usability findings into designs
  • Manage a team of interaction architects and visual designers
    • Communicate weekly responsibilities to each team member
    • Mentor junior team members
    • Conduct regular design reviews for all team projects
    • Address or escalate any issues that arise
    • Conduct annual reviews and help develop career and training plans for team members
  • Work with product owners to help align product development with customer needs
    • Work with product managers to define the high level requirements and acceptance criteria for new features
    • Review new feature ideas and improvement opportunities with product managers

The Skillset:


  • Minimum 7 years experience as an information architect
  • 2+ years experience in a leadership role with small to mid-sized teams
  • Ability to effectively collaborate with teams of IAs, designers, copywriters, product owners, developers, and QA in an Agile working environment
  • High proficiency with Sketch, Axure, or Omnigraffle; Creative Suite a plus
  • Ability to successfully run multiple projects and tasks simultaneously
  • Ability to quickly explain concepts through sketching and/or other rapid prototyping methods and communicate these to colleagues and stakeholders within the company
  • Ability to help define strategy, concept, content, and features
  • Experience working with personas and integrating customer research into designs
  • A strong portfolio of wireframes and user flows for a broad range of products
  • Extensive experience designing for websites and taking a mobile-first approach
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills and ability to rationalize design decisions
