Role within User Centered Design Group:


  • Serve as the key leader in the organization for research and HF practices
  • Evangelize User Centered Design and design research within Plexus and with our clients
  • Establish and sustain partnerships with business development teams to ensure a user centered design approach is an integral part of every opportunity
  • Engaged in industry practices and trends in design research and serve as a liaison back to organization
  • Support the development, improvement, and implementation of UCD processes at Plexus
  • Provide product and/or concept analysis with non-formal approaches such as, role playing, guerilla research techniques, competitive benchmarking, heuristic analyses etc…
  • Plan, design, and execute usability evaluations at varying stages of product development and contribute to design recommendations and improvements to the user experience
  • Implement a high level approach and processes for the evaluation of products and/or concepts adhering to usability principles and best practices
  • Provide data analysis and partner closely with design and strategy to synthesize findings into actionable design principles and possible use cases which will serve as the framework for making design decisions
  • Contribute, support, participate in cross-discipline design principles workshops
  • Support the iterative process of product development with both generative and formative user research activities

HFE responsibilities:


  • Work together with our Quality Engineers to author and implement SOPs to ensure compliance with agency standards
  • Manage/support project needs and outside resources while guiding the organization towards sustained growth of the group
  • Partner closely with UCD Functional Manager to expand and develop group capabilities by supporting the hiring of personnel, establishing and achieving group objectives, developing and maintaining technical roadmaps, and establishing, maintaining, and improving design research and synthesis methodologies

Organizational Responsibilities:


  • Work with the broader project team and business development to identify opportunities, scope work and write proposals as it pertains to research activities
  • Instill and reinforce the Plexus culture and fosters positive change, supports continuous improvement, interfaces/share work across other functional groups, design centers and business units, and fosters positive company morale
  • Establish, maintain, and improve user research processes to ensure reliable, productive, and quality results
  • Participate in marketing and sales activities including initial customer contact, presentations, and technical and business discussions to enhance the representation of the group's and company's capabilities
  • Ensure that non-billable hours are appropriately used for group development and improvements of user centered design processes

Education & Experience:


  • 10+ years of HFE experience with a demonstrated understanding and proven record of success in user centered design
  • Advanced degree from an accredited university in psychology, human factors engineering, or related field
  • Experience growing a team of researchers within a large cross discipline enterprise a plus
  • Must have excellent collaboration and communication skills, and be a natural in front of clients
  • Experience with the process required to bring a medical product through to FDA submission
  • Experience working in both design consulting and corporate environments a plus
  • Interact fluidly with cross discipline teams of strategist, designers, and engineering developing complex systems while balancing the ambiguity of front end design and rigorous regulatory requirements
  • Thought leadership, strong point of view and confidence to recommend the right approach for user research and the ability to build consensus and align the team in the recommended direction
  • Proficiency with qualitative and quantitative data analysis methodologies and passion and ability to contribute to the synthesis towards design principles and user experience
  • Excellent presentation, problem solving, written and interpersonal communication skills are a must
  • Significant experience with developing research plans, protocols, study guides, screening and managing the recruitment process, in-field contextual research and in-lab interviews, observational deduction capabilities, and HF testing
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally as needed.
