Job Purpose:

Serves as a Lead/Senior UNIX System Administrator for DISA Operations, DECC-Montgomery (DECC-M) located at Maxwell Air Force Base – Gunter Annex, Montgomery Alabama responsible for managing the functionality and efficiency of multiple UNIX-based Operating Systems with emphasis on Red Hat Linux (RHEL).

Essential Functions / Responsibilities:

  1. Responsible for providing high level technical systems administrative support and direction for the UNIX Operating Environment (OE) and associated middleware regarding system administrative subjects, concepts, and tool sets supporting DECC-M operations to include setting up administrator and service accounts, maintaining system documentation, tuning system performance, installing system wide software, validating and implementing critical system patches, allocating mass storage space and isolating/repairing faults using a series of diagnostic tools and tests.

  2. Ability to direct essential system adminstration functions across a matrixed team technicians to include both government and contractor, set up and maintain multiple and different flavors/versions of UNIX operating systems, supporting tools, middleware, and priviliege sets, attend and actively participate in Change and Config Control functions, and implement Security Technical Implementation Guides (STIG) in direct support of Information Assurance Vulnerability Management (IAVM).

  3. Analyze diagnostics of applications, system and vendor software, and resolve operating system /application system performance/challenges, administer/execute RHEL utilities, system and vendor software; and monitoring and tuning UNIX-based OEs, system software upgrades, propose and implement enhancements, installations, maintenance to improve performance and reliability within the supported OE.

  4. Troubleshoot and actively work incident management responses related to UNIX systems, related tool sets and unique customer requirements, complete proper documentation, and follow through to Develop strategies, policies, procedures to design and implementation standards related to the use of UNIX based resources.

  5. Exercise sound independent judgement in developing methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria associated with obtaining results under this contract; and identify upgrade needs, and anticipate customer requirements by effectively planning, scheduling, and overseeing system upgrades.

  6. Develop, install and monitor UNIX operating systems and associated system software; migration application subsystems and determine functional requirements through daily interactions with customers and coordinate with the development teams on systematic enhancements or changes.

  7. Conduct performance monitoring and work as part of a team to provide support when required and support cybersecurity and IA policy efforts to maintain the cybersecurity posture of supported systems, related hardware and support tools.

  8. Evaluate and recommend use of software, guidelines, procedures, and development of project plans to lower level staff to offer prompt resolution options, patch management, version control and administrative systems expertise.

  9. Interacts with both customer and contract leadership relating complex technical issues/solutions in a manner to establish a partnership.

  1. Improve the customer’s operating environment by providing expert support while also maintaining the cybersecurity/IA posture of systems/hardware managed/administered for both DECC-M and DISA Mission Partners’ assets.

Work Environment

This job operates in a professional secure office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, copiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines.

Physical / Mental Demands

This is primarily a sedentary role; however, some mobility and filing is required. This would require the ability to move from one location to another, lift files, open filing cabinets, and bending or standing on a stool as necessary. This position requires the ability to make read, analyze and interpret data for long periods and make decisions in a high pressure environment.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

Full time position working an average hours of 40 per week to meet the needs to the contract hours requirement. The employee must be available during the hours of 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday and is expected to work at least 8 hours a day. After hours or work in addition to 40 per week may be necessary.


Limited travel is expected for this position, less than 10% throughout the year.

Education and Experience:


  1. DoD 8570 Information Assurance Technical Level II (IAT-II) and Computing Environment (CE) Certifications

  2. Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or related discipline plus 6 years of experience providing DBMS application development support and administration or;

  3. Providing UNIX system administration support in network and software development environments ensuring mission success in support of DoD unclassified/classified networking environments;

  4. Equivalent combination of related education and experience may be substituted.

  5. Minimum active Secret Clearance with the ability to obtain and maintain a Top Secret Clearance/Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) indoctrinated

Preferred Certification:

  1. DoD 8570 IAT-II Certification: CompTIA Security+CE.

  2. DoD 8570 CE Certification: UNIX/LINUX Operation Environment Certification.

  3. Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) Version 3 Foundation Certification.

  4. Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) Version 3 Foundation Certification.


  1. Demonstrates technical expertise and comprehensive knowledge in UNIX based operating systems to include performing a variety of complex assignments Proficient with installation, configuring, managing, monitoring and controlling UNIX operating and supporting system software

  2. Ability to perform a variety of complex assignments to include analysis of system faults, troubleshooting incidents, and conducting a series of diagnostic tests on both systems and hardware to detect, prevent and resolve problems effectively and efficiently

  3. Proven experience reviewing and preparing technical documentation, testing and installing software, researching and recommending methods and techniques to improve operations, conducting preventive maintenance, and managing/administering multiple technical projects with varying schedules to achieve optimal operation efficiency
