Department Description

The Adult Medical / Surgical High Acuity unit provides care to a diverse adult patient population with an emphasis on acute and chronic medicine patients. The patients require more frequent or more complex nursing assessments and interventions. Up to 16 different services admit patients to this unit. Common patient populations seen are respiratory compromise, cardiac conditions, kidney and liver patients and infectious diseases.

All 28 beds have telemetry and continuous pulse oximetry monitoring capability. Patients transition from the adult critical care units, Post Anesthesia Care Unit, Emergency Department and acute care floors to this unit, depending on their condition and nursing care needs.

Nurses on this unit are a highly motivated group of professionals providing outstanding care to the entire patient populations served. Teamwork among our nursing staff, as well as physician and nurse collaboration, is well tuned and allows workflow to occur optimally.

The exposure to the diverse patient populations and varied levels of complexity in care provides nurses the ability to developing and hone keen assessment skills. The unit is fast paced and highly rewarding with many hands on learning opportunities available on a daily basis.

Job Summary

Designs and oversees nursing and administrative operations in large patient care areas. Accountable for the overall administrative planning and coordination of the staffing, fiscal and material resources. Assists with the development and implementation of new programs and policies.

  • Develops and implements operational processes to ensure quality patient care across large departments and / or multiple units. Participates in the development and implementation of patient care practices which meet internal policy, external regulations, and accepted standards across the continuum of care
  • Represents nursing units within purview, and / or medical center wide on interdisciplinary committees. Addresses a range of patient care topics impacting the medical center and / or health system, such as patient satisfaction levels, quality improvement initiatives, workflow efficiencies and clinical information systems
  • Collaborates with subordinate management to recommend and maintain adequate staffing levels, Advises senior leaders of administrative and nursing issues, the needs of individual units, and resolution of these matters
  • Works collaboratively with labor relations on bargaining unit issues and contract negotiations at the local level. Facilitates and oversees resolution of human resources, labor relations, employee safety and risk management issues
  • Coordinates the resource needs for areas of responsibility, including the review and approval of budgetary recommendations. Prepares and reviews variance analyses of budgeted revenues and expenses
  • Promotes an environment for collaborative decision making and shared governance across large departments and / or multiple patient care units. Ensures a shared voice in nursing practice and the exchange of ideas to continually improve nursing and patient care outcomes
  • Responsible for employee recruitment, performance evaluation, progressive discipline and staff development. Instills strong management practices to create a culture of teamwork, collaboration, and timely achievement of goals and objectives
  • Provides mentorship / leadership to nurse leaders. Reviews and approves individual leadership / professional development plans, with succession planning needs in mind
  • Collaborates with IT managers to develop and implement new or improved patient care information systems and coordinates efforts across large and / or multiple units
  • Partners with leadership across services (e.g., outpatient, children's, cancer center, etc.) to develop and implement policies and procedures for coordination of care for all patient populations

Required Qualifications

  • Active Registered Nurse licensure in the State of California
  • Active American Heart Association CPR certification
  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing or higher nursing degree
  • Progressive and recent nursing administration and leadership experience in an acute care unit in an academic medical center at the assistant nurse manager or above level (within the last 5 years) 
  • Strong hospital management experience, with progressive and in-depth expertise in patient care services; knowledge of hospital / clinic operations in a hospital or medical center setting; knowledge of appropriate professional standards for the department and team
  • Excellent communications and interpersonal skills to foster and promote an environment for effective communication and collaborative decision making across multiple units and disciplines
  • Excellent leadership, fiscal and operations management skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with physicians, management and staff from all disciplines. Ability to create and maintain a goal-oriented climate of teamwork
  • Strong knowledge of relevant healthcareinformation technology and patient care workflows and processes
  • Strong knowledge of relevant regulatory requirements, as well as related legislative, accreditation, licensing and compliance environments
  • The flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations

Preferred Qualifications

  • ANCC RN specialty certification in Nurse Executive or Nurse Executive-Advanced
  • Master's degree in Nursing or relevant area

Work Environment

  • Keeps working areas neat, orderly and clutter-free, including the hallways. Adheres to cleaning processes and puts things back where they belong. Removes and reports broken equipment and furniture.
  • Picks up and disposes of any litter found throughout entire facility. 
  • Posts flyers and posters in designated areas only; does not post on walls, doors or windows.
  • Knows where the Environment of Care Manual is kept in department; corrects or reports unsafe conditions to the appropriate departments.  
  • Protects the physical environment and equipment from damage and theft.
