By joining our Division of Structural Design, Soil Survey and Test Section as a Transportation EngineeringSpecialist in Franklin County, you'll have the opportunity, with the written approval of the State HighwayEngineer, to serve as an advisor for statewide or high-profile transportationprojects. Provides expertise on various transportation projects and develops engineering guidelines. Reviewsand approves engineering documents as a Licensed Professional Engineer.

Holders of the Transportation Engineering Specialist position will complete tasks such as:
  • Engineering analysis of soil and rock slopes.
  • Writing Geotechnical engineering roadway reports.
  • Manage geotechnical projects from setting boring plans, subsurface investigation, lab testing, toreporting.
  • Provide guidance to construction and maintenance personnel with geotechnical issues.
  • Review consultant geotechnical submittals for compliance with KYTC guidelines.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Holders of this job will obtain the following skills:
  • Slope stability software.
  • Geotechnical labratory testing.
  • Computer aided design and drafting.
  • Technical report writing and review.
  • Construction plan reading.
  • Familiarization with KYTC design standards and details & material specifications.

Minimum Requirements

EDUCATION:See Special Requirements.

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS:Must have four years of engineering experience in addition to that required for licensure as a Professional Engineer.

Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE:A master's degree in engineering will substitute for one year of the required experience. Graduate work in engineering beyond a master's degree will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.

Substitute EXPERIENCE for EDUCATION:NONE

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.):Must possess a valid driver's license prior to employment in this job classification. Must be licensed as a professional engineer by the Kentucky Board of Licensure for Engineers and Land Surveyors OR must be licensed in another state with the ability to obtain a Professional Engineering license from the Kentucky Board of Licensure for Engineers and Land Surveyors within the employee's initial six month probationary period. Engineering decisions recommended by individuals without a Kentucky Professional Engineering License must be approved by a KRS Chapter 322 Licensed Professional Engineer until licensure is obtained. Employing agency is responsible for ensuring employee possesses and maintains required licensure(s), certification(s) or other credentials.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in the office and in the field. Will be exposed to risks inherent to construction sites which require the following of safety procedures.

Probationary Period

This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
