This position will provide support to the Laboratory’s research in Control of Complex systems. This position will focus on advanced R&D related to transportation system modeling and control in one or more of the following areas: networked traffic flow modeling, traffic signal controls, performance analysis and automated fault detection and diagnostics for transportation systems, transportation systems simulation and software development.
- Expand research programs including writing proposals, building working relationships with existing clients, and publishing and presenting the results of scientific and engineering activities.
- Provide subject matter expertise in multi-disciplinary teams with a focus on transportation systems.
- Support development of new funding opportunities working with sector and subsector leads resulting in an expanded research program.
- Manage individual tasks and/or moderate multi-disciplinary projects; directing other staff, ensuring milestones are met, and communicating with clients; working with the task leads and the project or Program Manager to align the activities to overall program and laboratory objectives. This includes developing and maintaining relationships with outside clients funding the portfolio of work.
- Publish research results and be accountable for ensuring the quality of products that result from the research performed.
- Collaborate with senior staff from other organizations within and outside of PNNL.
- Mentor staff in key technical areas and develop teams to expand the research.
- Ensure safe operating practices are followed on the projects.
- Accountable to the Project Management Office Directors for expert delivery.
- Accountable to client with performance of high quality work consistent with work authorization.

Bachelor's degree with at least 5 years experience or a Master's degree with 3 years experience or a PhD with 1-2 years experience.
- Must have excellent written and oral communication skills, as the position will be required to support the development of technical documents and reports on a routine basis.
BS in ElectricalEngineering with 5 years of experience, MS in Electrical or Control System Engineering with 3+ years of experience, or a PhD in Transportation Modeling and Controls; Electrical, Mechanical, or Control Systems, and/or Advanced Control Theory with 1-2 years of experience.
- Professional Experience: The candidate is expected to apply and interpret standard theories, principles, methods, tools and technologies within their area of specialty. He or she must possess strong analytical, and communications skills, both oral and written, and be able to communicate clearly the goals, parameters, objectives and outcomes of their research. The candidate must be adept at working with moderate to large size technical teams. The candidate should be able to mentor junior staff in key technical areas related to transportation system and develop teams to expand the research.
- Technical Expertise and Breadth of Knowledge: The candidate must possess a strong theoretical foundation in transportation systems and engineering. Specifically, the individual must be fully competent in one or more of the following areas: networked traffic flow modelling, traffic signals controls, performance analysis and automated fault detection and diagnostics for transportation systems, transportation systems simulation and software development. The candidate would be expected to develop new and apply existing theory, tools, and technologies within the aforementioned domains.
