SmithBucklin, the leading Association Management Company, is looking for an experienced Trade Show Manager to join the Event Services team in Chicago. Our Event Services unit provides meeting, convention, trade show and sponsorship management worldwide through the expertise of our meeting professionals, who manage every facet and detail of our client organizations' events.

The Trade Show Manager plays a critical role in developing creative and strategic event solutions for our clients. This individual is the leadership of the event planning team and is integral in educating and mentoring their teammates.

What You Will Do:

  • Serve as a trade show specialist while also supporting a diverse client base in need of general conference/sponsorship/event management
  • Lead and coordinate all aspects of event management, including pre-planning, on-site execution and post-event wrap-up; to includecontracting, specifications, sponsorship strategy, vendor management, site selection,RFPs and personnel management
    • For tradeshow event management specifically, coordinate large, mid-size and small-scale exhibit floors, manage advisory committees, handle show floor programming, space selection and show logistics and partner on sales and exhibitor management
  • Oversee the financial management function, including budget creation, monitoring revenue/expense performance and reviewing staff time against fees
  • Manage project plans, contracts and agreements and ensure consistent communication with clients regarding show updates, project milestones and deliverables
  • Proactively manage changes in project scope, identify potential crises and devise contingency plans
  • Counsel clients on industry best practices and contribute innovative and effective ideas to client strategic planning and process analysis
  • Build, develop and grow any business relationships vital to the success of each project
  • Provide show strategy and assist with marketing content and strategy for show and sponsorship
  • Manage, coach, mentor and motivate a team of 1-3 direct reports as well as other internal and external partners
  • Conduct monthly one-on-one meetings as well as annual performance reviews for direct reports

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year institution or equivalent experience
  • 8+ years relevant professional experience in the tradeshow/convention/event/meeting planning industry
  • Direct people and performance management experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certification in Event Management or related professional certification is highly preferred
  • Excellent knowledge of conference and trade show industry terminology and comprehensive knowledge of meeting planning, tradeshow and registration processes
  • A strong understanding of union and labor requirements in different states and destinations
  • Familiarity with venues, facilities, convention centers and convention city packages throughout the country
  • Project management experience to include meeting deadlines on time and on budget
  • Experience and comfort around financial management processes, to include budgeting practices
  • Experience with international meetings and tradeshows is a plus
  • Experience with Expocad and/or other show floor management tools is a plus
  • Experience with Salesforce and/or other CRMs is a plus
  • Proficiency with basic computer programming, including the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
