Job Description
The Hartt School, a conservatory of Music, Dance, and Theatre at the University of Hartford, invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Associate/Full Professor of Orchestral Studies and Director of Orchestra beginning August 2025. The next Director of the Hartt Orchestra will lead the Hartt instrumental performance program into the 21st century, providing administrative leadership and a comprehensive vision for the program. In addition, the position includes teaching undergraduate and/or graduate courses in conducting and symphonic literature.
Responsibilities
1. Create a comprehensive vision for and lead the Hartt instrumental performance program into the 21st century, including providing administrative leadership of, and budgeting for, all orchestral activities.
2. Conduct the Hartt Orchestra and oversee all orchestral ensembles.
3. Actively engage in student recruitment and retention as well as curriculum development and assessment.
4. Lead the orchestral conducting graduate program.
5. Teach undergraduate and/or graduate courses in conducting and symphonic literature.
6. Adjudicate auditions and juries, advise students, attend faculty meetings, and serve on departmental, school, and university committees.
7. Remain active in creative/scholarly pursuits, developing a national and international profile as a conductor and educator, and seek peer reviews, as appropriate-all as expected for the successful pursuit of tenure and promotion.
8. Lead collaborative artistic initiatives and cultivate and maintain professional relationships with orchestral musicians in schools and universities in the region.
Required Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
1. The terminal degree of PhD or DMA in Conducting at the time of appointment is required; however, a master's degree in Conducting with significant experience at the national and/or international level will be considered.
2. Distinguished record of orchestral conducting with national and/or international recognition.
3. Demonstrated record of innovation and creativity in orchestral programing including a strong commitment to performing repertoire from underrepresented composers.
4. A documented minimum of three (3) years successful conducting experience in a college or university classroom, collegiate-level masterclass, and/or professional festival/young artist program setting.
5. Demonstrated collaborative, organizational, and communication skills.
6. Proven administrative leadership for a comprehensive orchestral program.
7. The commitment and ability to recruit new undergraduate and graduate conducting and instrumental students in collaboration with Hartt performance faculty and Hartt Admission.
8. Experience mentoring graduate conducting students including providing conducting time at the podium and playing new works.
9. Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, anti-racism, and student success.
10. Demonstrated commitment and ability to work with broadly diverse student populations and communities.
11. Ability to bring the experience of diverse populations to the department's curriculum.
Desired Qualifications:
1. Professional activity associated with nationally and/or internationally recognized ensembles and organizations.
2. Three (3) years successful teaching experience in orchestral conducting as a teacher of record in a college or university classroom.
3. Experience teaching conducting, conducting pedagogy, orchestra literature, and/or special topics seminars in conducting.
4. Experience in conducting an opera orchestra.
5. Engagement and experience with community-oriented ensembles including, but not limited to, youth ensemble conducting, summer music festivals, and community ensembles.
6. A demonstrated commitment to scholarship and a vision for future creative work and/or creating new works for orchestras.
7. Experience working with broadly diverse communities.
8. Engagement in social justice, equity, and/or diversity issues.
9. Ability to contribute to the cultural competence of the campus community.

The Hartt School offers accredited undergraduate and graduate programs in music, dance, and theatre. The Hartt School is a school of performing arts within a mid-size university setting. Hartt students benefit from a diverse array of master classes, artist residencies, internships, and partnerships with leading professional performing arts organizations that help them achieve mastery in their discipline, find personal fulfillment, and transition successfully from college to career. The Hartt School has a total enrollment of 400 undergraduate and 115 graduate students served by 46 full-time and 105 part-time faculty with a 12:1 faculty to student ratio.
Hartt's Music Conducting program gives students the unique opportunity to gain conducting experience in a variety of genres including vocal, opera, musical theatre, and all aspects of instrumental conducting.
