About WGU Academy

WGU Academy is a recently established division of Western Governors University that exists outside the main operations of the university in order to dramatically impact college readiness efforts on a large scale. Its primary mission is to develop and deliver new solutions for college and career readiness to tens of thousands, even hundreds of thousands, of individuals who otherwise would not be prepared for regular enrollment at WGU or at other institutions. WGU Academy offers college-level courses that will support students by promoting a high level of confidence, study habits, and communications skills to be successful while at the Academy and throughout their future studies. In addition to supporting WGU, the Academy will also work with numerous external institutions, foundations, and states.

Position Summary

This role is responsible to manage and coordinate all technology platforms at WGU Academy which directly support the end user technology environment. The systems and areas of responsibility include but are not limited to: Salesforce, telecommunication systems, systems administration, integration monitoring/ management, and maintenance tasks. In addition to technology operations, this role will participate in research, procurement, design, development, analysis, testing, and implementation of software operating or application systems. Communicates project information to client, project manager, or other design personnel working on projects. Maintains exceptional working relationships with clients and staff. Other responsibilities will include maintaining availability and integrity of databases, sharing of common data, management of new deployments, upgrades, and systems and data security by overseeing proper key and index management and data dictionary maintenance.

The expectation for this role is to be available to perform systems maintenance during non-business hours so that systems are functional and accessible during normal business hours.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Manages multiple tasks and responsibilities in high-pressure environments; excelling at pinpointing and resolving problems in early project stages to avoid cost/time expenses
  • Participates in complex system maintenance tasks
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to work equally well in self-managed and team-based Agile projects.
  • Responsible for backup configuration, scheduling, and system recovery
  • Clones copies of production database to staging, QA and development environments
  • Deploys and maintain high availability systems
  • Integrates third party products with existing infrastructure
  • Responsible for system security
  • Performance tuning
  • Researches and troubleshoots technology issues
  • Investigates and provide information to technical and project leads about database utilities, features, and limitations
  • Works with vendors on product upgrade, maintenance, and support
  • Performs routine administrative tasks
  • Attends and participate in team meetings
  • Provides support to systems programmers, clients, consultants, and department staff
  • Performs systems maintenance during non-business hours and availability as needed ad hoc testing or emergencies
  • Assists in the analysis and purchase decisions of vendor products
  • Analyzes software requirements to determine feasibility of design within time and cost constraints
  • Communicates (verbally and in writing) issues to appropriate staff and customers
  • Performs miscellaneous projects as assigned
  • Updates technical skills as required

Knowledge and Abilities

  • Exceptional skills in performance and system monitoring
  • Data integration experience, specifically API development and deployment
  • Salesforce administration experience
  • Broad technical knowledge and abilities
  • Professional collaboration skills and the ability to build strong cross functional relationships


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, information technology or related field
  • Five years of recent relevant experience

Working Conditions

5-10% travel possible
