Position Overview Are you a network engineer who loves to write? We are looking for a technical writer to help us document our complex networking products. If you have industry experience and writing experience, but not technical writing experience, we may be able to add you to our team. We can teach you the tools of the technical writing profession.  The successful candidate will write concepts and procedures as well as create illustrations that describe how to use our software. You will learn our products by installing and using them, reading specifications and bugs, and talking to members of other teams. You will work closely with other technical writers in a large single-sourced documentation project. You will also work with members of the product management, support, and QA teams to produce technically accurate and relevant documentation for our customers.  We offer a position in a small documentation team that supports multiple products and produces many small documents in a short period of time. In addition, we also spend long periods of time writing in-depth content in our administration guides. You must be able to meet both short-term and long-term schedules as well as work independently and with the group.  We document the GUI and CLI, and we use the following tools: MadCap Flare, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, and Adobe InDesign. Knowledge of HTML, CSS, and scripting is also desired. Job Description:Design, develop, and maintain customer documentation, including:

  • Administration guides
  • CLI reference guides
  • Release notes
  • QuickStart guide
  • API guides
  • Illustrations of hardware and accessories
  • Diagrams
  • Other customer-facing product documentation as needed

 

To do this, you will: 

  • Work closely with product management and engineering teams to understand the products and their documentation requirements
  • Collaborate with technical writers, product managers, developers, quality assurance team members, and technical support team members to deliver accurate, relevant, up-to-date, and complete product documentation 
  • Write conceptual and procedural content
  • Create vector drawings of hardware and accessories
  • Use and maintain scripts to generate reference guide (PHP, Python, Twig, YAML)
  • Test and verify information for accuracy & completeness
  • Review other writers’ work for grammar and technical content
  • Respond to customer & internal requests for information
  • Balance short-term and long-term projects 
  • Acquire in-depth product knowledge quickly through hands-on experience with products and interaction with subject matter experts
  • Help improve processes, standards, and templates for the documentation team

 

Requirements:

  • Experience working as a network engineer
  • Ability to learn the tools and methods of professional technical writing
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, to meet deadlines, and to simultaneously tackle and coordinate multiple projects
  • Experience using or aptitude to learn MadCap Flare, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Illustrator, and Adobe Photoshop to write technical documentation and create drawings 
  • Ability to convert complex technical information into clean, concise, and coherent end-user documentation in plain English 
  • Strong command of standard American English grammar and usage
  • A BA or BS degree, preferably in computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, MIS, English, or a related field •
  • Technical writing coursework, certificate, or diploma is a plus
