Our Opportunity:

The Corporate Information Technology group in Charles Schwab & Co.'s IT organization is comprised of teams that support the goals of Schwab’s internal corporate functions through the delivery of technology, operations, and projects.  The goal of the Desktop Engineering team is to engineer and implement highly effective, reliable, secure, and innovative personal computing solutions that support the Schwab workforce and our clients.  Our focus is to deliver solutions that align with the Digital Workplace Technology (DWT) group and various lines of business strategies through an agile and customer-aligned approach. 

The Technical Director of Desktop Engineering will lead and focus on the creation of strategies and roadmaps that will deliver emerging technical capabilities to support the desktop computing infrastructure systems and initiatives across Schwab, identifying and vetting emerging hardware and software technologies and recommending the practical application of these technologies into our next generation of products and solutions.  This position will operate as a key technical SME within the Digital Workplace Technology organization and to other teams. 

You will be part of the Digital Workplace Technology team at Schwab, focused on the desktop experience for the Schwab workforce, improving all aspects of our technology, making this a best-in-class computing environment. This Technical Director will focus on driving client-centricity solutions, reducing time to market, and increasing efficiency. In addition, this TD will focus on opportunities to further refine our Digital Workplace Desktop Engineering Blueprint and Roadmap, along with technical director peers, adding new innovative technologies and solutions over time.  This is a unique opportunity to grow and transform our business through driving significant step-changes in our time to market, building more integrated client-centric experiences, and enabling project success via cross-functional coordination and ownership.

 

What you’ll do:

This Technical Director works as a team member alongside the Product Owners, Technical Leads, Subject Matter Experts, and other supporting team members to deliver solutions around our desktop infrastructure.  This is an opportunity to be a part of a cutting edge team respected for the products they produce and building products that clients love.  The scope of activities within this role include the following:

  • Utilizing knowledge of business drivers and business capabilities (future and current state), to determine corresponding enterprise system designs and change requirements to drive the organization's targeted business outcomes.  Manage and develop the architecture for a broad scope of projects, working closely with application architects that manage and design architecture for projects or initiatives.  Foster an in-depth understanding of the ways that Schwab serves our clients, and the key ways in which Schwab can improve the delivery and quality of those services, products, and tools
  • Champion the stability, performance, and security of the Digital Workplace environment and supported application areas
  • Design and lead the implementation of platform architecture across a group of specific business applications or technologies based on enterprise business strategy, business capabilities, business requirements and non-functional requirements, with a focus on process reengineering of the desktop, cloud solutions, virtualized environments, imaging, and hardware solutions
  • Provide consulting support to application architects within projects to ensure the project is aligned with the overall enterprise architecture and meets all business requirements
  • Partnering with groups such as End User Computing and Field Services to foster a reduction in legacy products and versions to enable better focused hardware choices, and an environment that enables all work styles and work flexibility tailored to personas, as well as evaluating and positioning us with industry trends such as ‘Desktop as a Service’
  • Maintaining current knowledge of technology trends, competitor, and market trends and the practical application of existing, new, and emerging technologies to enable new and evolving business and operating models, while advocating and augmenting the principles of information technology strategies
  • Analyzing  the business-IT environment (run, grow and transform the business) to detect critical deficiencies, and recommend solutions for improvement (systems of record, differentiation and innovation)
  • Define the principles, guidelines, standards and solution patterns to ensure solution decisions are aligned with the enterprise's future-state architecture vision, while directing governance activities associated with ensuring platform architecture assurance, compliance, and audit requirements
  • Document all solution architecture design and analysis work, and identification of organizational impact (for example, on skills, processes, structures or culture) and financial impact of the platform architecture
  • Advocate for agile practices to increase delivery agility, providing advice to development teams and mentoring the technical community on the practice of architecture, application modernization and technology strategy
  • Owning the end-to-end solution design and architecture for overall portfolio and domain
  • Collaborates with Enterprise Architecture and Systems Administrators from other domain to design/deliver larger scoped initiatives, aligning roadmap with strengths and opportunities
  • Lead architectural vision of the Schwab desktop, base image, common desktop applications, and imaging processes for the desktop systems to ensure consistency with overall Enterprise Architecture and Digital Workplace strategies
  • Lead designer of the overall technological architecture of imaging of Microsoft Windows systems at Schwab, supporting Microsoft Windows 10 integration and update cadence of the future
  • Mentoring the Desktop Engineering technology team, driving the team in engineering practices and automated deployments and partnering with other TD peers across various technology groups to identify further opportunities for the Desktop Engineering blueprint and roadmap
  • Partner with Product Owner as an Architect Owner (responsible for the architecture) for all products in the Desktop Engineering portfolio

 

What you have:

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, system analysis, engineering or a related study, or equivalent experience
  • Minimum of 7-10 years of experience as an architect in building and supporting complex, highly scalable infrastructure solutions
  • Deep knowledge in the following technologies:
    • Microsoft Windows 7, 8.1, and 10, with the ability to optimize the stack for performance and security
    • Desktop and laptop hardware running Microsoft Windows, including best practices in currency on hardware drivers, and firmware microcode
    • Internet browser technology: Google Chrome, Microsoft Internet Explorer, and Microsoft Edge
    • Active Directory, Azure Active Directory, and Group Policies
    • Experience in designing and implementing secure and scalable cloud solutions for enterprise companies
    • Microsoft Systems Center Configuration Manager, and other imaging and software deployment methodologies, including MDM solutions such as Microsoft InTune
    • Google Chrome OS
    • Virtualized desktop and applications through Citrix and VMware
    • Microsoft Office and Microsoft Office 365
    • Remote Access technologies and solutions
    • Troubleshooting of performance issues across all layers of desktop hardware, OS, and pnetworking
    • Microsoft licensing and enterprise agreements
    • Scripting for automation and administration with PowerShell, Batch, VBS, VB, .NET
  • Strong track record in forecasting emerging technology trends and creating actionable plans to intersect with solution offerings
  • Demonstrated performance history of leading and driving change with tangible outcomes and high velocity – taking a ‘why not?’ attitude vs a ‘why’ attitude
  • Ability to welcome, embrace and perform in Schwab culture
  • Experience with Agile methodologies and application to technology teams
  • Experience in identifying, evaluating, and recommending solutions using advanced architectures and technologies to facilitate rapid development and implementation
  • Leading cross-functional teams to translate customer requirements into architecture and product specifications, and execution of those projects
  • Experience in implementing and supporting effective security solutions for an enterprise computing environment
  • Good presentation and communication skill to all levels of the company, including senior leadership
  • Good judgment and the ability to handle stressful situations
