Reporting to the Assistant Controller, Technical Accounting ("Assistant Controller"), the Technical Accounting Analyst is responsible for researching, drafting, and communicating technical accounting policy under US GAAP. This position may expand to supervise other technical accountants. This position will have significant integration with MPC's external audit firm and various MPC executives.
Counsels and advises internal customers on consistent and appropriate application of financial accounting policies and procedures;
Drafting research and documentation of technical matters such as acquisitions, divestitures, investments in other business entities, and joint ventures;
Drafting illustrative policy examples, as necessary, to either improve current policy library or to clarify relevant application of US GAAP to any evolving business practices;
Utilizing review of various accounting matters as an opportunity to offer business process improvement recommendations that will improve efficiency and/or profitability;
Presenting various technical accounting training topics to the entire MPC accounting organization;
Working with cross functional teams on the implementation of new accounting standards, including the new lease accounting standard;
Assisting with quarterly and annual technical accounting assessments, such as segment reporting analysis, goodwill impairment reviews, fair value disclosures, and variable interest entity analysis;
Interacting with the company's external auditors with respect to highly technical accounting matters;
Interacting with the company’s internal auditors.
Specific qualities and experience for the position include:
A solid understanding of US GAAP;
Experience with GAAP accounting research and the ability to relate US GAAP to practical real world situations;
Proven analytical skills
Superior writing skills as evidenced by relevant commentary on financial reports, issues, etc.;
A strong understanding of business and the role accounting plays in both growth and cost control scenarios;
Highly collaborative relationship style, adept at working across the organization;
Excellent presentation skills and ability to discuss key business issues comfortably and credibly with other of organization functions as well as with external auditors;
Unflinching integrity, ethics, and the courage to uphold principles;
A demonstrated ability to work effectively with a wide group of stakeholders.
A Bachelor’s in Accounting is required
CPA is required
Professional Experiences & Qualities:
The ideal candidate will be a Certified Public Accountant with at least 5 to 10 years of accounting experience.
