Oversee the outsource process of all U.S. jurisdictional sales/use tax returns to ensure they are filed accurately and timely in accordance with applicable laws, regulations and rulings in effect for all Scholastic business units
Standardize compliance processes across all business units wherever practical
Research and investigate sales tax changes in law and amend existing processes as required for ongoing compliance.
Streamline the tax return payment process for monthly prepayments and filings across all business units.
Review requested audit documentation and work with all internal organizational departments to obtain all needed information timely
Reconcile support data to returns and research variances for audit explanation
Use available research tools to obtain support for defense of all Scholastic Organization Divisional sales and use tax positions.
Make certain that all tax notices are addressed, researched and brought to resolution prior to statutory deadlines
Effectively interact with other tax discipline team members as well as the outsource provider to address and manage any tax issues that may arise
Effectively interact with all support teams (Finance, Sales, Customer Care, IT, etc.) to resolve matters that may relate to tax and tax reporting.
Research questions related to property tax valuation requirements to ensure valuations are correctly reported and property taxes are accurately paid
Perform initial review of all property tax valuations and associated compliance filings are completed timely and accurately
Ensure that all current business licenses and business taxes are filed correctly.
Assist in the review of business licensing requirements for all business unit locations and perform research needed for any new locations as a result of business growth
Review both sales and property tax calendars to ensure no compliance is missed or late
Continually work to improve current processes to increase efficiency and maximize production
Be responsible for the timely and accurate analysis and reconciliation of both the sales and property tax accounts to ensure that account balances are consistent with tax liability requirements.
Develop sales tax data tables to be used for scorecard reporting for Upper Management and year-end reviews
Develop monthly driver based analysis for property tax impact reporting going forward
Develop ad-hoc reporting and work on special projects as required to meet the needs of the business
Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Tax, Finance or related field; advanced degree a plus
Minimum 7 years direct Sales/Use Tax compliance experience in a multi-state/jurisdictional tax environment.
Supervision of Tax Accountant
Multi-state sales tax audit experience
Working knowledge of Vertex or similar taxing software.
Experience with accounting applications such as Oracle required.
Experience with tax research software (BNA, CCH, RIA, etc.)
Advanced level of proficiency in all dimensions Microsoft Office (intermediate experience in both excel and access)
Experience in Property Tax Valuation and compliance filings is extremely desirable
Self-motivated individual who has the ability to multi-task in a fast paced environment
Ability to plan, organize and complete work with minimal supervision to meet all deadlines
